Tell me about them please! I am currently looking a second dog to join Jess (Beastie lives with mum and dad) and a little NE at a rehoming centre has caught my eye. She is 12-14 months old and that's all it says.

I am not looking a breed in particular, just a rescue and something that'll get on with Jess and is good with horses and people etc

It was a looooong time ago through a family connection, but if I recall correctly....loyal to their person, neutral to/not that bothered about others, territorial, independent/clever (will make their own decisions!!), large, need a lot of exercise, prefer colder conditions. Historically they would be inclined to work with one person and take down a very large animal, so bear that in mind!

Not a numerically massive breed but def not the first one I have heard about in rescue, I am not sure where she hails from but there is obviously someone not doing good homechecks :(

Pretty sure when I last looked there were no litters available on the KC or Champdogs websites. If they're anything like the Keeshond whom they resemble, I'd say stubborn, brave, great guard dogs, loyal, possibly one person dog. It's a breed I've looked at cos it's a short haired taller version!

When I was growing up a neighbour had one of these and he was a great dog. Looking back now he was very similar In temperament to my malamute by that I mean stubborn, loyal, energetic , far too clever for his own good and very independent. Quick to challenge authority if he didnt think you were up to it but so long as you were firm, fair and consistent and gave him enough attention then absolutely a dog of a lifetime.

Known a lot of elkhounds over the years, my friend bred and showed the group winner at crufts some years ago. She lives on hill in Wales and her dogs live as a pack. I looked at one before I had the shibas, but I only had a flat at the time. Lovely dogs :-)

I have 2 Norwegian Elkhounds, both males. They are VERY stubborn dogs -definitely make their own decisions! Milo is an excellent hunter and must be watched at all times when off lead or he will run until he loses his prey. Elmo is only interested in other dogs. Both are very friendly to people and dogs and love cuddles. They are happy to do whatever you want - either on the couch all day or walk all day. Elmo competes at agility but only when he feels like it! They are fantastic dogs but not the easiest and need consistent training or will be a handful!!
