Nose Bleed...

Last thursday evening I brought my mare in from the field to discover she had had a nose bleed, she has never suffered from this before even when doing very fast/hard work.
The vet advised me to rest her over the weekend and keep her in for a couple of days. I turned her out yesterday and she went mad but no sign of any more nasal problems
Any advice on nose bleeds - causes - problems - stopping them>?
 
Causes - blood vessel bursting somewhere in the respiratory tract.
Problems - if there's a lot of blood, or it comes from more than one nostril, it's more concerning as it can indicate the lungs themselves are bleeding, rather than the upper airways (scratch in nostril, for example).
Stopping them - difficult one. The horse has to be fit enough for the work required of it, and fittening must take place gradually. You could investigate the source of the bleeding by having her endoscoped on a treadmill, which will allow your vets to give a more informed prognosis.

had she got something up her nose and bust a vessel trying to get rid of it? had she been larking about with her mates and bashed it?

Ron very occasionally gets a random nosebleed in the stable and the vet reckons its from blowing his nose too hard!
 
Hi EJ, Av kept having nosebleeds from one nostil at shortening intevals last year. I believe that once from one nostril isnt anything to be too worried about, but if it happens more than once then get the vet involved (alhtough sounds like u already have). Av was scoped to check for gutteral pouch mycosis, once this was eliminated a sinus infection was suspected. She had a course of antibiotics all all has been good since touch wood.
 
Thanks everyone, The bleed is from one nostil and this was the same nostil that we an infection problem with earlier in the year, 2 courses of antibiotics knocked it on the head. However that infection was a greeny/yellow thick liquid. On both occasions I have consulted the vet and the first occasion the vet took a swab which was tested. She has never had a nose bleed before and is fit and been eventing and worked all through the summer without any problems.

I'm hoping Jen is right and she has just knocked it larking about in the field!
