Do I call the vet again or not?

My horse had a few nose bleeds back at the end of sept nothing major it wasn't pouring out but had obviously been bleeding. The vet came and said it was probably just a one off.

BUT I went out to get her in friday night and it was bleeding again but a bit worse this time and fresh bright red blood. She seems ok in herself but I don't know whether to call the vet again, or is she just breaking down from having a hard life?

I would speak to the vet that looked at her last time and see what they say.
Could be a number of things causing it...Sorry not much help

If there has been more bleeding, will it bother you - i.e. do you want to know the underlying cause? In itself, it's probably not bothering the horse at the moment, but if you want to have some ideas of what could be causing it, then you will need the vet.

They are likely to recommend doing a endoscopy to have a look around and see if they can find the site of the bleeding. Most of the time bleeds are a one off from some sort of trauma, but if this is continuing, then looking into to it isn't such a bad idea.

Hope that helps.

I can't offer any better advice than that of a vet (above) but generally - if the bleeding is only from one nostril and not heavy then it is usually just a burst capillary. It generally looks a lot worse than it is.
If the bleeding comes from both nostrils then there is a possibility it is more serious and a vet could check it out but as Imogen says it may be more distressing for the horse than the nose bleeds.

As Rachel says, a recurrent nosebleed would worry me and I'd want to know what was causing it. It could be something that would mean you have to change how you manage/work your horse and if you don't know that then you could make the siutuation worse. Having said that, I'd wait for nosebleed #3 before calling the vet, whilst noting the dates of the previous 2 in your diary. #1 could be a one-off, #2 could be a coincidence but #3 needs investigating! Note alongside the nosebleed what your horse had been doing that day work and play-wise - could help with diagnosis if it happens again.
