Noseband advice please

What do you all use a grackle for? And is it incorrect to use one with a pelham? Why? Why do they contradict each other?

Well, given that I wouldn't use a grakle for anything, I'll try and explain: It is supposed to be used for horses that evade the action of a bit by crossing their jaws. It is effectively just yet another way of tying a horse's mouth shut, albeit perhaps a little less uncomfortable for a horse than a flash noseband or a drop.

Because the bottom strap of the grakle goes in the horse's curb groove/chin groove it is going to be very sore to lay that strap on top of the curb chain that also goes there when you are using a pelham bit. Doesn't stop people doing it, of course.

The grakle comes and goes as a fashionable piece of kit, rotating between the showjumpers, eventers and polo people. I've also seen them used on some racehorses and out hunting - anywhere where schooling may be minimal and going fast and jumping things is popular.
