I'm a simpleton - I like the plain flat cavessons... But if they ever make a blingified noseband in extra-full size, then I might be tempted with 'other'...

CotswoldSport does a very nice bling bridle (browband AND noseband) I got a f/s for PF and it's miles too big... that might work for you

I prefer a flat noseband and have one on one of the horses, another has a raised because it came with the bridle, and the third doesn't have a noseband at all, except when going to posh shows and stuff..in fact none of mine really NEED a noseband (idea -why don't I take them all off and save some cleaning!)

Could anyone experienced with Kinetons tell me how they work and what type of horses go well in them. Just interested because apparently my horse used to be ridden in one before I had him, would seem to me to be the last thing he needs.
BTW - no noseband is best!

It all depends on the horse's head. My little cob with a big head looks best in a plain flat hunter-type cavesson, my Section A suits a raised stitched light cavesson, my big cob with his rather fine head looks fantastic in a stitched drop noseband, the AA mare will look gorgeous in anything but I suspect a stitched raised cavesson will be best on her.

Kinetons loop round the bit, with no back strap, so when you pull, it applies pressure to the nose.

Very good for pullers, as like a combination bit it gives the horse another aid to 'whoa'

Racehorse wise The Dikler used to run in one as he pulled like a steam train all the way round. He was 17hh and a front runner.

a raised cavesson to me looks best - however we would always pick the noseband that suited the horse, right? I would be sickened to find that someone was using a noseband because it was 'pretty'....

both mine have padded crank flash nosebands, however i dont 'crank' them up very tight as i disagree with it, its purely because i think they are nice and comfortable and easy to use, plus both my bridles came with them (elevator and a sabre comfort).

How do you stand on diamante cavessons???!

[/ QUOTE ]

lol! If you wanna use one, use one...! my issue is with people using a (and this is just an example) mexican grakle 'because so and such at the RC/livery yard/whatever has one....'

Personally I wouldnt put a diamonte cavesson on one of my boys - however the wee mare I may be getting might appreciate a bit of bling....

I prefer the look of a nice plain cavesson however, none of mine wear a noseband at all. They just get in the way

I dislike the look of any noseband which clamps a horses mouth shut!

TBH I think it depends on the horse. I have a padded cavesson and a crank and like them both but I think the flat ones look nice too, I do tend to prefer the chunky look myself. I like a wide noseband on a horse with no face markings but like the look of a thin one on pretty section A's and B's for example. I hate the look of a drop and not too fussed on grackles either but they seem to be the most fashionable atm. My horse came with a very expensive grackle bridle which has been hung in my tack room since about 2 weeks after I bought him.

Pretty much all the young girls at my livery yard use Mexican Grackles. I dunno why though, their horses aren't particularly inclined to tank off or cross their jaws.

Personally my horse goes just fine in a flash so that is what she uses but I've been wondering lately if there is some sort of new 'fashion' for Mexican Grackles because I've seen a lot about lately.

(BTW I am not thinking of changing my noseband to be fashionable [shuuder] - I'm just interested in why so many of the girls at the yard use it)

Entirely depends on the horse and the shape of it's head. Personally I use a chunky raised crank cavesson (was a flash but I took it out) as my horse has a huge head and thin nosebands look stupid! I love to see a proper hunter type with a proper flat hunter cavesson. I think some styles of noseband, including the flashes and grackles, dosuit some horses better, but I would only ever use a specific noseband if I actually needed it. My horse doesn't need a noseband at all, only for the 'finished' look it gives, so in that sense yes I do use it because it's pretty... but I have it seriously loose!

I think it depends on the horse, i think cavessons look best, raised on fine horses and flat on chunky horses. Different disiplines seem to have trends, eg. dressage - crank, SJ - mexican grackle.

B for intanstance looks terrible in a flat hunter cavesson, Topper and Berry looked fabulous in one! Though thinking about it, I don't think that there are many horses that a high ring grackle doesn't suit........

Humph!! you WOULD have to be different!!
Personally I think grakles and flashes are a bit busy, but of the two prefer the grakle; does the job much better as well as looking better
smile.gif

I quite like drop nosebands although they make to make a plain head (thinking of C's horse here!) plainer, and I hate to see them on too tight or low...
So you think YOU'RE difficult!?

PMSL!!! My main bug bear with nosebands is the flash tbh! I know I have 2 bridles that have them on and I have used them and once YES it was for fashion, but it was the 'correct' thing for B to wear at the evaluation we took H to in the summer - plus I didn't have a different one in black.

The amount of times I see flash nosebands on, with the cavesson too fecking low AND loose, with the flash bit REALLY tight!!! I know I have been guilty of doing this to poor Berry, when I was a teenager, but I really didn't know better and peeps who I thought knew about these things, never said owt about it!!! I think that this is partly WHY I get so upset about this now.........

I think B would look VERY smexy in a high ring grackle and a BLING browband

I like the raised cavesons best. (On my boy).
I actually don't need a noseband, I went through a phase of not bothering but I got so fed up of people commenting on my lack of noseband I upped my tack cleaning by adding the noseband back on just to get some peace and quiet. LOL

I like to see a cavesson on if anything, I'm too lazy to bother with nosebands unless a horse goes better in one that does a specific job, some cobby types do need a cavesson for purely cosmetic reasons (IMO) People always commented "Why no noseband? You should you know", "Umm, No, I flaming shouldn't if I don't want to!" Pony Club used to irritate me beyond belief, ponies should be ridden with nosebands at all times. Grrrrr......why? So they look pretty? For my daughters' sake I put a cavesson on but I made sure that the Instructors KNEW it was for her sake not their idea of correctness.

Of course for hunting, shows etc I am quite capable of turning my horses out conventionally and correctly, but it used to really get up my nose that people thought they had a right to comment on what I rode my horses in and I'd go out of my way to be unconventional, rode my arabs for years in a hackamore with no throatlash or browband.

The noseband you describe is a crank cavesson. It, like the flash and drop and grakle (although the grakle is meant also to stop a horse from crossing its jaw) is designed to stop a horse opening its mouth and evading the bit. Course, just because that's what it's designed to do, doesn't mean you HAVE to crank neddy's mouth shut
