What should I do?
I bought my cob in a Wilkie and a grackle, into a Pelham for XC. She goes well in them. But the grackle constantly slips down her nose, it’s a bit Roman I suppose and it just slides down. Or sideways. Should I change grackle? A different brand? Or change nosebands altogether? What are your thoughts? TIA
 
personally I don't like Grackles I prefer Flash which many don't like. Depends on your horse what sort of thing would suit her, and what she needs, also if a different type of bridle would be better. I think your trainer would help you better as also depends on how the horse goes, there are so many nosebands now compared to years back.

My new flash I prefer as does not get pulled down her nose like the old type do

I'm guessing from what you've said that you've bought her fairly recently? If so I'd stick with what she knows as she's going well in them. I'd try a different grackle, maybe a different brand and is it maybe slipping because it' too big?
 
I bought her just over a month ago.

The head stall of her bridle is a full and I got a cob sized grackle. I don’t think pony would fasten on her 🤷‍♀️ I will try a different brand. I do have an old cavesson lying around somewhere, I’m tempted to try it to see if he reason she is in that combo is fashion? I know so many people who use grackles ‘coz they look good’…
 
There's actually a fair bit of evidence to show grackles are quite a nice noseband for a horse and don't put much pressure on sensitive pressure points of the face. If she's happy in a grackle and you can get one to fit properly, then I'd be very tempted to keep the grackle as is. That said, if you can get a cavesson to fit better, then that may be a better option?
 
A Mexican grackle might stay a bit higher on her nose? As others have said, if she's going well I'd be inclined to leave her in a grackle for the time being.
 
I use grackles and think they do a good job. Failing to see how it slips if it’s properly adjusted? Mine is firm rather than tight on a cob that seems to be more settled with the bit more still in his mouth. Because of the crossover, it’ll find its place unless it’s too loose I’d have thought?
 
Okay, I’m going to try another grackle. I really do like how she goes in it so won’t change unless I have to.
I have no idea why it’s happening. I have it adjusted properly, not too loose. The bottom loop just slips off, then the middle fluffy bit falls down. Maybe it’s her chin shape?? Idk.
 
Do you mean that the strap around the bit slips off, if so then my old grackle has a strap joining the two straps underneath the head. Might this help.

It is a loop about 4" diameter squashed and stitched for about an inch in the middle. You thread it on the top strap and push the lower one through before doing it up. You could easily use any strap eg a spur strap or boot lace.
 
One of my horses thrusts his tongue forward between his front teeth when being bridled with a grackle. You fit it, it looks great, get on, walk a bit and then he withdraws the tongue back to a more normal position and hey ho the grackle is in loops and needs tightening again. Is this a possible scenario for you?
