As title, just curious really. Horse had gastroscopy yesterday and during the scope had a rather large nosebleed, from the nostril that the scope had been inserted. This is the first time any of our horses have had to be scoped, so I'm not that familiar with the procedure, first hand. It stopped after about 5 mins.

Vet didn't seem too bothered, but I'm curious to see if this is indeed fairly normal, as vet said it was.

Thanks in advance.

The nasal passages contain loads of blood vessels - if caught by the fairly rigid scope this can cause a nosebleed that looks rather dramatic (especially when they snort it all over you/the wall/the floor etc!) but isn't anything to be worried about providing it stops quickly :) Same thing can happen with stomach tubing colics etc.

When my Dales pony was in Leahurst one Christmas Day, being tubed during a colic bout, they hit a blood vessel on the way in. The amount of blood that came out was quite unbelievable. I looked like I'd been at a murder scene.
