Sparks had had a nosebleed when she was brought in last night. Doesn't sound like it was too bad (one nostril) and had stopped when they found her. I popped in last night on the way home from work and she seemed a bit quiet but I think that was partly as she was too hot (it was mild a humid, so I changed her rugs to lighter ones). Checked her temp and that was normal. Guess I'll just keep an eye on her, then maybe speak to my vet on Monday. She had a couple of bleeds about 4 yrs ago (about a week apart), vet was on a yard visit when she had the 2nd one, so he took bloods and found she had a virus that time, she was fine after a course of Ab's.

So am I right to just be giving her a few days off and not being overly concerned. I'm kind of assuming she has probably picked up a virus again.

pm penky and ask her to show you the article on her gulliver.
Not that yours sounds the same but it is worth a read.
Mine had nosebleeds but not like hers!

God no, sounds like it will make me imagine all sorts!!! I'm bad enough already as on 12hrs day shifts, so Sparks is being looked after by a friend and though I trust her totally, being stuck at work unable to be there leaves too much time for me to occupy by worrying.

My vet said to me...
One small nosebleed from one nostril dont worry (providing it is not profuse and stops obviously)
Two nosebleeds keep an eye (maybe ring and discuss)
Third one get vet to scope.
This would be over a few days or weeks- not over your horses lifetime!

Any bleed from both nostrils is more serious as could be from the lungs and profuse bleeding that wont stop is much more serious! So call vet. But you know that anyway!

So I wouldnt worry just yet. Just keep an eye on it.

Thanks Dozzie, you have confirmed my thoughts. Don't think I would be dwelling/worrying about it as much if I wasn't at work. Have had text from friend now too, to say she seemed O.K. this morning.

You know what it's like when you can't be there!!!

A horse I used to own started having regular bleeds from one nostril. I never seen them but would see drops of blood on the floor ain the morning and her nostril had dried blood in it. She was scoped and she had a haemotoma which I was told could burst at any time. Yes I was scared. Vet said they could cauterize it but then they stopped and I didnt see one again.
Friends old TB regulary had them when he had a mad en in the field. Hes about 29 now and fine.
I wouldnt worry unless they become regular.

I have a tb that has had a few nosebleeds, only minor, was when she sent herself silly int he stable or got too excited in the field, stress or hyperactivity seemed to cause them vets werent concerned. Perhaps they've had a mad day tearing round the field?

The situation with Gulliver was a constant trickle bleed from one nostril for 4/5 days (under supervision of Leahurst) but yours doesnt sound like this. My new horse has also had a nosebleed (you can imagine my panic !!! but that was months ago vets told me not to worry as it stopped within 15 mins. Monitor the situation, maybe keep a log of the bleeds, length of time and date. Main thing is try not to worry too much.

I'm a lot less worries today (mainly cos I'm not stuck at work all day)!!! Not more bleeds so far, and had quick chat with vet, who agreed nothing to worry about unless she has more. Will just give her an easy week, which is a bummer as had planned to go XC schoolimg (but there will be other times for that).
