Hi

Was doing some research on ways to make my horse more comfortable in summer, she rubs nose, has runny nose and breathing seems very slightly weird and coughs a lot when we start riding and some head shaking in there. Anyway was thinking of trying nostrilvet and read some threads on this forum from back 2008 of people using it or the alternative nasaleze for us. Anyone any experience of these as not sure what to buy. Hate buying products that don't work.

I used nostrilvet and I'm not sure it really worked. It is very hard to get the stuff right up the nostril where it needs to be and my horse was great whilst I was trying!! I also used human beconase and he loves the smell of this but again didn't really do much. Sorry can't be more help!

My horse has a pollen allergy that can get quite bad by the end of summer. I asked my vets about Nostrilvet and they say don't waste your money. The science behind the product isn't rigorous enough. The idea is that it creates a sticky lining to the nasal membranes so that on each breath in, the allergen-laden air will press up against the sticky sides of the nose and be trapped before it can be breathed deep into the lungs where it causes the problem. Vets point out that at each breath in the horse takes in a vast volume of air, 95% or more of which hurtles straight down the trachea without touching the sides of the nose at all. Only a teensy % will brush against the nasal membranes. Waste of time, they say. So far, my horse is not doing too badly. I've read on here that there is currently a question mark over whether MSM can help a horse with allergies. The thinking seems to be that MSM supresses inflammation in the joints but also has a more general anti-inflammatory action in the body. It's interesting because I started my horse on Cosequin last November, as he's 24 and needs a bit of help with his joints. And as he's a lot better this summer than he was last summer (when he wasn't on Cosequin) it does make me wonder if it's accidentally helping with lung inflammation. If he deteriorates further, my vets are going to trial bute for the same reason, ie anti-inflam. Let you know.
