My boy has had issues with his back etc. which has resulted in 2 visits from the back lady and a new saddle. Following back ladies instructions I am taking it slowly with horseys excercise only walking and trotting .

This morning on the way back towards yard started to trot but he felt a little uneven so we went back to walk. He then becomes impatient and tries to get away from me by nearly sitting down and almost rearing! He has only ever done this once in the two years that I have owned him in .
The previous time was acceptable because he was very scared about returning to the place for the first time where he had been hit by a car, so I understood that. This was impatience to get home as fast as possible! I gave him a tap with the stick and he then did the same again, so my friend advised me to circle him around clump of bushes until he came back down, eventually he did and we managed to get back safely .

This behaviour has unnerved me as I hate rearing and I am now feeling anxious that he will do this again and may do a proper rear !

I don't think he was doing this because he was in pain or he would have done this at the start of the ride.

I am unnerved by his behaviour!

Poor you, I know how you feel, its horrible, i've had similar experiences and I'm not the most confident, I just go back to basics and ride in the confines of a school, till I feel trustworthy again, good luck and look forward not back..

Thank you murphybarr, unfortunately I don't have a school where I keep my horse, but I could hire one close by, so I might look into it. Sometimes you wonder why you devote all the time, money and sleepness nights about the horses health and then you get rewarded by this kind of thing!

Perhaps I will take up poodle grooming or something!

Before you go pick up your first poodle, do you have an instructor who will walk out with you and help you manage the situation?

Dizzy does the 'I'm going to go up in a minute' thing. When I feel it coming on, I loosen the reins, have my body weight slightly forward and to one side of her neck, and my hands forward, wide and ready to be either side of her neck. I make use of a Thelwell kick, as a tap on the shoulder will get a rear and a tap on the bum equals a buck. The aim is to keep her moving, especially going forwards (Dizz prefers to go backwards, so we have a few discussions).

Hugs hun.

Thanks Mrs. M !

Funny you should say that about an instructor, I was just thinking the same thing. I have been meaning to organise said person for sometime only the one I did think of doesn't seem available anymore. So I will ask around and try to get that done! I will also try what you suggest, so far he hasn't tried to buck, but goes sideways, so thats something!!

How are you doing? I hope you are feeling back to normal (whatever that is!) and lots of best wishes to you xx

Can I just check that the place he was returning to this time was not the same place he had the accident?
I wouldn't trot or canter (if poss!) on the way back to the yard, I have been taught that it is better to do that on the way out if you can.
Sounds though like he is napping now - Have you done some work in the school since the back problems - Maybe that is a good place to start and get your confidence. I can understand why you are unnerved, but like another poster has said, I think it would be great to have an experienced instructor with you. Also perhaps see what happens with no horses hacking with you as well as company? How much time did your horse have off with these back issues?
Hope it all works out soon.
