Was off up to BBs for a long hack and SJ tomorrow, eventually coupled the trailer (long story), dashed to the yard, was running late so didn't take the partitions out of the trailer, loaded P and off we went. She scrambled around a bit up the drive, but I figured she was getting her feet. Down the lane, turn right, she was making a LOT of noise and I figured she had fallen. Stopped and had a look, she seemed fine, and off we went again (I had not even hit 20mph by this point).

Right turn on to A road taken at a crawl with a big sweep, she scrabbled again but I couldn't stop as nowhere to do so and I had traffic behind - again and again she was creating

I had to go into Carterton to turn round, called BBs and said I was going home

I drove at 15mph all the way home and was super careful but still she wasn't stable.

When I got to the yard I opened the jockey door and the first thing I thought was "oh wierd she has had a wee" except she hadn't, it was sweat, absolutely POURING off her

Got her out and tied her up and she has lacerated her nearhind *sob* - luckily most of it is superficial except on her coronet band, but she was sound. The aluminium on the side of the trailer was VERY scuffed (razorings of aluminium had come off where she had been trying to get stability I presume). I immediately threw her cooler on, took the partitions out of the trailer, stuck her boots on (which I hadn't bothered with before) and re-loaded her. She went in perfectly sweetly and immediately stood on the left - I had, as you should, had her on the right. Took her round the block and she didn't move. She was happy as larry and had totally cooled off by the time we got back to the yard

So glad I did that as I did NOT want to end the day on a bad note, mares never forget do they!

Hibiscrubbed her leg and put some Dermoblin on and chucked her into the field. She has come in 100% sound but have bandaged her up to be on the safe side and to protect the grazes from dirt.

Talking to the YOs daughter who is a vet student, she told me that apparently mares are FAR worse to travel than geldings, even more so if they have had a foal - to do with their pelvis apparently, but I had never heard that before although it makes complete sense (I know how knackered my pelvis is after having babies!)

So anyway, that was my day - not really been my week

Oh no!
No jumping tomorrow then??
frown.gif

Silly girlie, neither of mine travel that great, both get really sweaty, never really thought about why before!!

what a day!

hope she is alright tomorrow, well done for taking her out again though, least she wont remember it as all bad,

Rio wouldnt travel on the right for some reason, but she was fine on the left or without a partition, very odd

hope shes is ok, and you have a better day tomorrow

xx

Oh no... poor Porrige!

Hannah sweats up like this when travelling, but the more I travelled her the better she became (so I can guarantee she will have to start all over again once Troy is weaned). You did the best thing reloading her and taking her around the block... well done honey!

Just feel really silly - I KNOW she travels spectacularly well without a partition as she was a star when I picked her up! If I had just taken 2 mins to remove the damn thing I would have had a lovely day and we would be off SJing tomorrow - don't you just LOVE hindsight
frown.gif
Mind you, I wasn't to know she didn't like standing on the right, I was only doing what the towing peeps tell you to do!

Oh no! Not the most sucessful of days

Glad she is ok - hope she isn't too sore in the morning.

Mares require more room to spread their legs and balance - if you do allow this, they have a tendancy to fall over. Personally I would never put my horse in a UK horse trailer. That is saying a lot as I would let one travel in the back of a pick up!

was goin to ask what side you put her on till you answered futher down. One of my old ponies is like this he could only ever go on the right even if it meant larger horse on the left (which is obviously normally wrong). if on the left he couldn't stand up for love or money even if going at 15mph but on the right he is like a rock. Strange but there is obviously a large difference for him when in the trailer by being the other side.

You will probably find if you load her on the left next time with partitions she will travel well. Most awful way to find out (Amber did similar falling over type and sweating profusely but road we were on meant we couldn't stop for nearly 10 mins and god were the cars behind us being forced to travel at 15mph annoyed!!!

Poor Porridge - No Blewbury then?

What aluminimum did she cut herself on? Isn't the trailer lined with rubber?

I've never heard about mares travelling worse than geldings, all of mine have been fine.

Oh no she didn't cut herself on anything but her own feet - will take pics tomorrow of the leg and the trailer to illustrate. I am going to rubber the sides at the bottom though, or afix batons as she had nothing to grip onto as she was scrabbling. The floor is fully rubber matted.

Nope, not a chance in hell of Blewbury tomorrow, cannot risk getting sand in her injuries

Poor P

Glad shes tucked up all okay in her box now.

Did you get any pics of her injuries?

Was looking forward to catching up, but these things happen. Im just pleased she will fight another day.

Vx

DD I didnt realise you were going to Blewbury tomorrow. If you want some support I can come along if you like?

That is very interesting as i have exactly the same problem with mouse, she will go up and then shakes, sweats and scrambles all over the place it's horrible and very scary, she is alot better in a lorry with a large space, but she isn't great traverler,
Your story reminded me of exactly our first trip out with mouse, it's not nice
the interesting thing is i have thought for along time that mouse has had a foal before i got her so that would tie in too
sorry you had a bad trip and i hope poor porridge recovers

Sorry BBs, missed your post - nope forgot to take camera, will do tomorrow tho (before Church eeeeeeeeek! - boys are singing!)

Thanks for all the sympathy guys, it is appreciated!

Oh no! How disappointing for you.

Think it was a brilliant (and brave) idea to take her out again without the partition. What a good girl she was for going straight back on.

Sending you good vibes for next time you try! What a shame for you, I know how much you were looking forward to taking her out in the new trailer.

What a shame! I was looking forward to an exciting post about your competition, thank heavens you managed to work it out so quickly - hope you get out soon

I don`t think I get you, so if they have more to spread their legs and balance they are in more danger of falling over?.
