So I took Herc out for our usual Wednesday night plod with Blues sharer walking with me (Blue - along with half the yard - has got really gammy eyes atm, so she’s feelin sorry for him and didn’t want to ride, so figured as she’s come down she can come wi me and ride Herc back.)

Anyhow….We’ve just started to go up the path at the side of out field and I turned to look behind me and saw a couple of horses, so pulled Herc to the side and figured I’d let them pass as a)they’d be faster than us, and b) he can be a bit funny about things behind him. First to pass was a bloke an a grey, who trotted passed with out a word, at this point I start thinking ‘that’s a bit rude’ the women he was riding with then came past with her horse jogging a bit, but I didn’t think anything of it as he’d been havin a moment at the bottom of the hill, as she got in front she turned and asked if Herc’l would be fine if they took off, I was honest with her and told her I’d rather they didn’t as tbh I had no idea what his reaction would be, but as he thinks he’s a race horse at times (He’s a 15hh Traddy cob) it prob would involve me flying up the hill after them with no breaks. At this point I realise the Bloke was already cantering – the women just trotted after him – They then pulled up, as theres a blind bend, went round and on to the top path…and bombed it. At this point Herc does his best giraffe impression and start going sideways in to my sharer as he watches them. I was not impressed.

First of all…The ground is solid, and gravel, I would never consider cantering up it and don’t know anyone else who would, but judging by the reaction of her horse at the bottom, I have a feeling they do it regularly.
Second – They have no idea why I stopped Herc, and they had no idea of my riding ability, if I’d have been alone I may have been slightly less annoyed by this, however as I had someone walking with me, for all they know he could have been a green horse, or I could have been a novice rider.
Finally – As I said, there are blind bends on this hill, it’s also used by walker and cyclists. I have no doubt that if they hadn’t seen me they’d have taken off straight away, meaning if I’d have been any further up, they’d have been straight in to the back of me….or worse could have been in to walkers with kids etc, as they wouldn’t have been able to see until too late.

I told the YM when I got back and she’s going to talk to the YO and see if she recoginses the description (it’s not a large village, tho there are quite a few horse owners, you tend to see the same people out and about)…Both of us were saying that in a way we were lucky it was Herc as, while he’s not brill, he’s quite steady and isn’t phased by much, if it had been the YM with one of hers she’d have been screwed, likewise if it had been the stud owner with one of the stallions or the newly broken mare.

Sorry for the rant but it’s riders like this that give the rest of us a bad name!

They sound like a pair of selfish **holes to me! I feel sorry for their horses. Well done Herc for staying relatively calm. My horse would probably have bucked me off and gone after them!

Very rude behaviour! I would ahve expected them to walk past you, say hello and ask if you would be OK if they trotted off - trotting would be the most I would do in such a situation, pissing off in canter is likely to upset other horses. Also agree that people should not canter off if they can't see their way clear of walkers, cyclists, etc.

Glad Herc put up with it all! :)

How bl**dy annoying! You know some people are just so inconsiderate....

Well done your neddy! And you know what, you can have the best behaved horse but other horses cantering off in front is not sometime most horses can tolerate. I would of been with them within a moment (or my horse at least, i would crying on the floor.. lol)

Silly accidents can happen when there is no need for situations like this to arise.

Thanks I was very proud of him, and it's nice to know i wasn't over reacting about it. I have feeling that if there wasn't anyone on the ground with me it may have been a different story, but as he's very much a people horse he was happy.

I'm glad it was me on him too, my original plan was to put my sharer on first as i can get on from the ground easier, And even tho she's a competant rider she's still very novicey and wouldn't have appreciated the giraffe impression.

Part of me's regreting not sayin what i was thinking when the bloke trotted past and made a point to him that it was inconsiderate (part of me's also wishing my horse kicked, cus that might have ade them think, but thats a bit mean)

This is the sort of thing I've seen happen on pleasure rides: people going like merry B****y past novice riders and not caring if their horses can't deal with it and get scatty. Also I heard about one pleasure ride where some pr@t was running around blowing a hunting horn and everyone's kid was falling off their ponies.

Agree, not funny.
