Not a Novice Ride...

I hate seeing 'not novice ride' in ads without some sort of explanation, so vague, people use it to mean anything!

Included 'not suitable for absolute beginners' when sold my mare recently, not because she was particularly awful in any way, but I suspect with a total novice on her back, she'd have quickly taken advantage ;)

Are you buying or selling? :)

I think there are far too many ads out there with not a novice ride put on them, so if someone bought the horse and the horse says, starts to rear, there is no come back on the seller. It is such a shame because if I see not a novice ride on an ad, i dont even open it up to have a look, and I am sure i have probably missed a few ideal horses because of that.

If I ever included something like this in an advert I'd give a little explanation "fizzy pony so not a novice ride" or something like that. If I read it in an ad I'd usually take it to mean either very forward going/excitable or a bit quirky in some way, just ring up if you're interested and ask what exactly they mean!

Tnh the silly thing is when I read it in an ad I immediatly think "Crazy pony!!" but I put it on my own ad for part loan about my sensible mare because I wanted an experienced rider rather than someone straight off a riding school. I think alot of people do this for the same reason.

Well, I'm looking to loan as my Warmblood is injured and deemed unrideable now. She's going onto grass 24/7 and as I am saving up for my next horse (probably due next year), I thought I should try getting a loan horse in the meantime.

There are some out there - but they all contain "not a novice ride". Well, I would have deemed my unrideable mare not a novice ride for sure (rodeo bucking, rearing... you name it, she does it) but I want to have a pleasurable ride for a year or so to just progress again (and also make OH believe I am sane and not the crazy person he thinks I am). As much as I want a young horse again for the future (albeit nicer than my mare), I'd like a loan horse for the short term with whom I will just have fun going on competitions, etc. - basically, one that will bring the fun back into riding again. I don't mind small nappy behaviour, just not the big, throwing toys out of the pram - spit the dummy type tantrums my mare had!! Considering that that is what I consider "not a novice ride", am I being a bit harsh not wanting to look at horses deemed "not a novice ride"?

I think sometimes its crazy, sometimes quirky and sometimes no muppets should try my horse.

I do know of someone who's head is up her bottom so to speak who put this on her ads to stop people coming to ride her horse who 'werent good enough'!!

I would say sharp, not suitable for beginners but NANR can be anything to anyone, some people feel their horse is NANR but many would feel otherwise.

If you see it on the ad phone up and ask them why they put it.

Some people will put not a novice ride because their horse needs sensitive and understanding riding but doesn't have a nasty bone in its body, others because it is quite forward, some to try and avoid getting muppets trying it, and some just because they have a high opinion of themselves and their horse......

I've even heard people say "not a novice ride because occasionally it can spook" well show me a horse that has never spooked!!!

To be honest spending much of my riding career in riding schools I have been constantly surprised at how many fairly hot horses cope well with very novicey riders.

So ask the question and see what sort of answer you get. Lots of brilliant schoolmasters have quirks so by discounting anything remotely quirky you could miss out, you just have to consider what you can put up with, say fizzyness but not nappiness, or bucking but not rearing.

I wouldn't write off a horse that's 'not a novice ride'. I have two that could be described that way, both of which are pleasant easy rides for an experienced rider. One will nap once and if she gets away with it will do it again, but if she doesn't, she's fine. The other is super but shys occasionally which I imagine would be unsettling to a novice rider with a poor seat! He is also very well schooled and sensitive and steers from your seat so tends to walk in circles/wiggly lines when ridden by a novice! I think it can mean anything from 'completely nuts' to 'I don't want a novice messing up my nice horse'.
