Not a rant just dont understand why

I don't condone violence to animals either, but if a loose out of control, GSD behaved aggressively towards my grandchildren, I would do what ever it took to keep them safe.

a barking dog that is loose will usually stand its ground but with kids about and an owner that wont get control of the dog it must be very scary

I would certainly protect a child at all costs, broken jaw - whatever, if I felt there was a genuine threat. I would also call the police in that instance.

Between dogs it's frequently just grumblegrumble, but we were attacked once - I remember posting here in tears - walking the dog on the pavement on a short lead and a rottweiler barrelled out of an open front door and all hell broke loose. The fight lasted over 10 minutes, every neighbour arrived to "help", they rolled into the street backing up traffic. It was terrifying. And yet, with all that, each dog had only a few puncture wounds (they were about size-matched) and no serious injuries. Lucky? YES! But also showed me that dogs can often handle themselves better than I think. Obviously you do hear about dogs that attack to kill :( I think they are fewer and far between, but I don't want to meet one!

I have hit a dog with a dressage whip when we were attacked on the bridelway while riding. My horse was wearing brand new reflective boots all round, only because they were new and I wanted to try them out for a laugh! The front left one was shredded where the dog latched on. I hit him hard (hit myself and my horse in the process, it was a bit of a panic reaction!) and then my horse reared up and front leg booted him. Dog was no damaged but he did back off enough for the owner to get a lead on.

I find it ridiculous to consider not defending a child under such circumstances. Children should also be under control and not approaching dogs adlib. In this instance the child (6yrs old) was lifted up off the ground out of the way and still the dog kept coming, no point in doing half a job and ending up escalating the situation nor doing nothing and risk getting bitten. Dogs should be under control and too many aren't. I would react in the same way if our nice, well behaved little dog was bothered..... she is never off the lead when away from home anyway and I would use a stick or my feet to defend her. I have never been bitten but would certainly not risk just allowing me or mine to be. It's always the few who spoil it for the rest. The incident should be reported to the police.
