Happy new year everyone!
Had a weird day yesterday, had decided to go out Untin with a friend so was quite looking forward to it despite having actually never really enjoyed it.
Got to the yard a little late and all 7 white legs of the field kept horses were stinking mud so took at least 30 minutes to scrub them to a grey/beige colour (no hose) and by the time we should have loaded up and travelled to the meet we had just started plaiting! Manes are not pulled correctly and so the plaits were........interesting.
Then found 2 mice in my tack box and despite throwing the terrier in there as I took out all the stuff, she STILL managed to miss both of them! Useless beast.
We pulled up at the meet just as they were leaving and I went to put my hat on..... and realised that I had left it in the tack room when I was getting changed! The only hat was my polocrosse helmet which did not look the part at all. We managed to catch up down the road a bit. I was quite surprised that my horses were quite well behaved at this point, I think I expected them to react more strongly. Copper the ex flat racer has never been out before and Eric used to point to point so he has although not with me and not for at least 3 years so I had no idea what he was going to be like.
Anyway, we caught up with the field and managed to stop and attempt to calm down. Had a brief chat and found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming so that was a relief. Copper was unimpressed with standing still and did a couple of unimpressive leaps (bless, i think he scared himself more than me). When we started off proper poor Copper had to really extend himself to keep up and we had some scary "cantering on road" moments where I just couldn't make him come back to trot and started fearing for his tiny pencil legs and fairy feet. True to form, I need not have worried and he was fine but I decided that I shouldn't really be out!
Eric proved himself to be exceptionally strong and far too much for a small person to hold, although also proved himself to be an experienced hunter- jumping what was put in his path and standing with the field when they stopped. We retired early and later heard that that is when the fun jumping started! Gutted as would have been lovely to try Eric over some hedges (well, see someone else jump him
)
Got our chauffered box home, sponged horses off, rugged up, fed, hayed the fields etc, went to the pub (best bit of the day!) and met a friend there who had been out. He had dropped my trailer off that morning as he had been borrowing it and he told me that the nosy yard owner next door had been asking him what I needed the trailer for and when he said I was going hunting she ranted about how my horses hadn't been ridden for months and didn't get fed very often!
I was surprised by this as I seem to spend an awful lot of money on feed so I'm not sure where it all goes...
Anyway, we were in the pub and although I didn't enjoy my day it was nice to see how welcoming and friendly everyone was and how the people in the villages came out to say Happy New Year as we went past and smiled and waved.
All in all, I have decided that untin isn't for me and I'll stick to other sports for now!
