Not again!! Horse Welfare

31 under-fed farm horses removed
A total of 31 horses have been taken from a farm because of their poor living conditions, say officials.
Many were malnourished and kept in a field littered with wire and metal, Denbighshire County Council said.

It is the first time it has used new powers under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to step in and take the horses from Ty Newydd Farm, Llandegla.

The horses' owner, Anita Ashley, who is being investigated, could not be contacted for comment.

The council's animal welfare team first removed 10 dogs and some horses from the farm before Christmas.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "The dogs were living in inadequate conditions. Some were kept in cars and caravans and some were in their own excrement - filthy and putrid conditions.

"The horses had no fodder available, pasture was extremely sparse and some horse were suffering from malnutrition. Their fields were littered with wire and metal."

Evidence

Initially, animal welfare officers removed the dogs and those horses in the worst condition, giving Ms Ashley notice to improve the other horses' living conditions.

But they have now taken the remaining horses as they said they felt she had not improved their living conditions within the given time.

On Wednesday last week, officers acted on advice from vets and removed 11 horses from Coral Springs, Llandegla, a field linked to Ms Ashley's farm.

They then took the remaining 20 horses from Ty Newydd Farm last Friday.

All have been taken to safe farms and rescue centres across north Wales and the north west of England.

The council said vets' approval was needed for council officers to remove animals, along with a comprehensive body of evidence.

Ms Ashley is in the process of appealing against a decision to remove 10 dogs and horses from her property just before Christmas, with a date to be fixed.

It is not yet known if she will appeal against the latest removals.

What is wrong with people! I just dont get it. These people that mis-treat animals shouldnt go to prision, they should be put in a nut home!

Saying that, knowing the laws of this country, they will prob just get a slapped wrist and a poxy little fine!

Yes, looks more promising that the Act will enable agencies to step in sooner. Gives me hope, at least, and once a few test cases have been through the courts, we might see more results.
