Not all Ardennes are fat

I must admit that she often reminds me of a rhinosceros.

I get the same idea with pure bred Ardennes - their heads are so wide :D

She is a branded Westphalian Kaltblut but apparently all the Northern European Drafts have common ancestry. For some reason her face also often reminds me of my WelshDxTB mare (who was pink) - think it's the shape of the eyes. She reminds me of a rhino when she walks very determinedly across the field. Your Tank is gorgeous.

ETA, sorry can't persuade the photo onto this page but link works (and I have YorksG's permission to post it - she's my horse)

Hi the yearling at the start of the thread is not an Ardennes, she is a Belgische Trekpaard, she comes from Steenkerke, Veurne near Dunkirk Belgium. She has a very detailed passport her name is Hostess van Sporkingshove, I bought her after seeing her on the Dragon Driving website.

Welcome to the forum! Lucky you for purchasing that lovely filly!

There is a man, named Robert Piessens, who posts many videos of Belgian Draft (Belgische Trekpaard) horses in Belgium. A good proportion of his videos shows teams of BD ploughing, pulling, driving, but there are quite a few of their national shows and of individual stallions. Take a look at Buffalo van 't Zwaluwnest, Mathador van de Bouwhoeve (National winner) and, my favourite, Simon van Straten. These videos show a consistency of breed type and their ability to move with lightness, for their size, and agility.

Good luck with your little girl. It would be so nice to see some photos of her progress.

Hi she has lost most of her baby fluff and is cleaning up well. Her sire is Ultimo van de Akker

Oh, she's gorgeous!! She looks like her legs have been dipped in paint, wonderful markings.

Oh, tulla, she's coming along beautifully! She really does look like she was dipped in black paint! What is her temperament like?

What a lovely breed..I would not want to be in the path of one of these in full speed..you would know it was coming though by the ground shaking...lol

I don't know if the ground was shaking, but I think it sounds impressive:

About how Ardennes should look, if you've read Oberon's link (http://www.thejoyofhorses.com/oct98/ardenneshistory.htm), I hope you noticed "There is also a stud book in Sweden, where they have maintained pure bred Ardennes dating from 1840's imports", so here's three old Swedish stallions from the past, three modern stallions, and one mare.

The stallion Ajve 7382 (born 1934):

The stallion Tojem 9666 (born sometime around the 1940's - 1950's):

The stallion Albyl 11102 (born 1969):

Modern stallions, Terbonid 11684:

The stallion Akke 11696:

The stallion Ever 11786:

And last, but not least, a mare, Peggy in "working condition", March, 2012:

The old ones look incredible (except the first one, he scares me a little - how does he graze?!)

I suppose the more modern ones aren't that dissimilar but B&W photography is very flattering ;)
