Not anti-miniatures, but . . .

We have a 3yo mini shettie, she is babysitting our new yearling in the field right now, she also babysits another of my ponies who won't go in a trailer without her, as well as already having a show career in her own right...she has been shown and placed at county level, in fact so far this year she has won more than any of my other ponies. And when she is 4 we are planning to break her to drive. Just because you can't ride them doesn't mean there is no point to them. No yard is complete without a resident mini imo :D

Here is Elspeth last winter.

When I couldn't ride for a year due to my back, it was my mini that saved me....we did many inhand shows and TBH, it was hard to get back in the saddle as he had given me much joy....he went on to do inhand with another lady because I felt so bad not giving him the time I had previously, but couldn't devote quality time to both horses, as the big one had had a year off and need oodles of work...

You see people with big flash cars and say 'whats the point?'...
You see people throwing themselves out of 'planes for joy and say 'whats the point?'..

Each to their own, 'Live and let live' is a great motto to go by....

If someone wants to spend their lives on mini's....let them, if it brings them joy, who are we to argue?

Look at train spotters...I mean...whats the point?? But if they want to continue spending their time crossing off train numbers, and they ain't hurting anyone....who are we to comment? :D

Well, if you think about it there's really no logical point to the vast majority of horses in this country. Most of them are pets, yes some might compete but for the vast, vast majority of competitive riders, competing is a hobby and not a living. So really, almost all horses are pointless! People just have them because they enjoy them;)

Oh, let me think:rolleyes:

You can drive them, you can teach them tricks, isn't there a mini high school display team in the UK? You can use them to nanny weanlings, or in Cruiseline's case adopt an orphan foal, you can harness them in teams and race them.

Most people can handle them, even if you are in a wheelchair, they bring a huge amount of pleasure to people everywhere, particularly those who no longer want to ride, or are unable to for whatever reason. They are cheap to feed and take up very little space, mine lives in a quarter acre paddock.

Don't knock minis until you've met a PROPER one, not these dreadful crippled dwarf ponies, they are brilliant, the jack russels of the horse world. :):) Huge characters, quick minds and damn good fun.:D

I didn't see the point in them either until I acquired one, he's 32" and will be the last of my horses I'll part with and that would have to be at gunpoint. Give me minis and arabs anyday.:)

Just what i was going to say.
My youngest daughter learnt pony care with a mini. Just the right size for grooming and picking the feet out etc. Also a good size for handling.
She had 14 years of pleasure from him until he was killed a few months ago.
He was perfect as a companion also.
There is a local man in a wheelchair who has a mini and even shows it from his wheelchair. They are fab.

The point is that she enjoys them I guess...same as you do with your horse:confused:

I really can't see why you can't understand that. Why do people have any pets?...dogs, cats, fish?

My friend has minatures and standard shetlands...she has health problems that prevent her from riding.

I was given my 2 as companions to my 16.2. They have wonderful characters and would be the last to go if we had to get rid of any, they are full of fun one is brain damaged and on his own little planet but we love him. The other is learning to drive, we also haul him out of the field once a year put a saddle on him and use his as a lead rein pony, he never puts a foot wrong.

LOL, quite!

But I'm sure you don't breed just because you think foals are cute!

Them being cute is a bonus and I love having a foal or two about the place :)

Yes, you are right, I breed because I like to try to produce a good, useful, quality horse that someone else will have a lot of fun doing whatever they want with them.
