not being ableto swallow/chew

further to my post below re horsey currently colicking with impacted gut has anyone had experience of this affecting their mouth, horsey cant chew or swallow at all...

(vets been out once and probably again tonight in case you havent read my other post)

Is he still dribbling? I would get the vet to check for choke.

Don't know if this will be any help, but we once took a horse on that was very very sick! Had the vet out, and she thought that it had lost it's swallow reflex!!!!!!

Anyway, the vet gave it a very strong course of antibiotics, and we had to inject it each day. We tried to feed mushy food, but it was very difficult.

Anyway, eventually, we thought it was going to die, but, it picked up and carried on. Then went back to the owner. I must admit it was scary, and very touch and go, but he made it!

ETS - please get the vet out again, as if it's not coke, he will need immediate attention. Good luck! I hope your horse is ok (((vibes)))

I have answered on your original post. When my horse had severe colic requiring surgery and on the other bad bouts he has had, he will not eat anything whilst he is still in pain and/or his stomach is totally full with food matter waiting to pass through/be siphoned out.

Hope when your vet comes out they can take the necessary action required to help him. Good luck

first thing to establish is whether he doesnt WANT to - or isnt ABLE to. get your vet to do a clincal nerve exam - this should establish if he is actually able to. If not - he has probably damaged a nerve. If hes reluctant then is more likely associated with the pain in his belly - he will be reluctant to eat or drink
