I have a 13 year old Welsh mare that we just got 2 days ago (kids pony). She's turned out in part of a field as she's prone to laminitis. Has room to move, other horses next door that she can see and sniff, etc. Just moved her into this area yesterday, the day before she was out in the big field with the cows. She's eating, moving around, curious about everything, comes over when we go in. Her poo is a bit looser than it was the 1st day she was here, but nothing to write home about. My concern is that she doesn't seem to want to drink. The water level is still the same in the bucket as it was when we filled it last night. I have seen her drink from the trough the day before, so she was drinking. So if she is alert and acting "normal", do I leave her be a bit (does know where the water is, took her over and she sniffed it but wasn't bothered) or get the vet out? thanks!

is she dehydrated? when you pinch her skin does it go back straight away?

my number 1 think would be to check if she is dehydrated, and if she's bright in herself then personally i wouldn't call the vet out, because ultimately she may just not be that thirsty at the moment, she might be getting all the water she needs from the grass she's eating where it has been raining.

thats just my personal opinion but you can see her for real and how shes acting etc, so if your really worried and she's giving you a good reason to worry then call the vet.

good luck!!:D

Thanks! :) That's what I was thinking as well. Her gums look fine, she is pooping, and happily munching her little section of field. I'm going to give her a bit of soaked hay later, hopefully she'll have drank a bit by then. Maybe she just doesn't like the bucket! lol
