Need some help with new horsey! She decided she wanted to cut her leg quite bad and has been stabled since Saturday. The leg is quite swollen and gunk is starting to come out of the cut itself. We tried putting her onto antibiotics on Monday but haven't been able to really get them into her succesfully. She has refused to eat her feed, even trying the nuts only, sugar beet etc. Last night and this morning we have tried suringing it into her but she rebels against this and then the spout blocks up when trying to squirt it in.
Does anyone have any remedies or ideas. She is a very fussy eater and think she's too cleaver to work out honey, mollasses, carrots that kind of tricks.
 
Get injectable! Failing that mix granules with strawberrry jam & slap right on back of tongue & hold head up till gone - works for our fussies.
 
how about soaking the nuts into a paste and mixing it in that. most horses will just slurp it up. i am lucky with mine though, if it starts off in her bucket, it automatically ends up in her stomach!
 
I used to have problems administering my horse with a Pergolide tablet and Bute (well Danilon!) so I mixed it up with apple sauce (bought ready prepared in a bottle) and put it in a big syringe (tablet first) and then administer it like a wormer, although the Danilon is not needed now the Pergolide is, and a once 'I will barge you around if you get near me with that' horse stands there opening his lips and I can administer without a head collar... he ALWAYS gets a hand fed treat of High Fibre Cubes as a thank you and I always praise him up! .... but unfortunately yours may have aleady got wise and may not trust you as much now, but you never know!

i mix the powder with custard powder - add hot water and make it into a paste and then when it's warm pop it in a syringe and pop it in his mouth - he can't get enough of it!
 
Don't rely on the anti-b's entirely even if you manage to get them into her. When you say gunk is coming out it sounds similar to an injury my horse got some months ago which wouldn't heal up, despite a course of Norodine that she started on the day of the injury. I could see all the gunk, it just wouldn't come out and the wound wouldn't dry. What worked in the end was a series of hot poultices of animalintex followed by dry poultices. She still has a scar and a bony lump though

Word of caution - don't poultice until you have cleared it with the vet, but it's an idea. Mine had the wound-tract syringed out and that sorted him - but it took two courses of Norodine, a temporary healing up, then a massive abscess which burst in a classical fashion. Then it was flushed with povidine and away it went.
 
We use instant hot chocolate in a syringe, mixed thick and then use like wormer. When our mare had a bad cut on her leg we used irrigation srynges to wash out the wound, with water mixed with garlic salt, the hair grew back black not white.
 
You need a really big syringe! (bigger than a wormer syringe) The nozzle won't block up!

Mix the antib's up with hot water!! then allow to cool until warm! Squirt into mouth like a wormer and have sweeties available after!
