for the past week poppy has not been eating her hay. after she was refusing to eat it i decided to soak it cause she sometimes prefers it that way, she ate it that night but now has stopped eating it again. i checked the other horses haynets this morning and neither of them had eaten much either.

this morning when i brought her out she started munching on the bale next to our stable, which is the exact same stuff as in her haynet. so i took some out to the field for her as it was super frosty and she ate it fine out there.

what do you think could be causing this, shes eating grass carrots etc fine just not her hay from her haynet?

thanks in advance

My horse started doing exactly the same thing. He would only eat a couple of mouthfuls of his haynet over night but if I tied it up outside with him in the morning he would eat it (especially if he was tied up and sharing it with a friend's horse!)

I started mixing haylege with his hay for a little while and now he eats his haynet again.

I wouldn't worry too much if he is eating his dinner etc

we only have hay at the farm, so i wonder if it because its so dry or just a bad bale since the other horses haven't been particularly keen on it recently either. i might try putting some out of her haynet and see if she eats it better

Ive got a fuss pot of a mare, wouldnt eat of the floor when she always has done, put it in a haynet and soaked it all gone!
They are jsut lil fuss pots sometimes!

As the others are not eating it either I would suspect you have an 'off' bale.

Just wondering where ur based as ours are off their hay since a taste of the grass at the weekend as the warm weather has made the grass grow a bit.
