hi, my boy who is in at night, out in the day has stopped eating his hay, he stopped when in for a week with the snow, he is eating his bed. i thought that once going out again he would revert to eating his hay but no he still is eating his straw, and a lot of it. Tried leaving a dirtyish bed but still no hay eaten. don't know what else to try. Is he doing it because he is lacking in something or just bored of hay?

Are other horses eating the same hay? Have you tried a different bale recently? If yes then would you consider switching to haylage?

There is a horse at my yard who was on hay but stopped eating it all night when he realised that haylage was on offer (used to just graze and that was it during the day) so they have had to switch to haylage now, could you do that?

Maybe you could try steaming the hay as it often smealls nice and sweet that way. Or you could change the type/age of hay?
