I'm starting to think that I don't have time for a horse anymore

let alone the energy

I took on a new job in April with more responsibility and more hours. At present I am working 3 nights a week and every other weekend. Then once a month I have to do a late then a sleep-in and then an early so I'm at work for over 24 hours

I have 2 children aswell so life is very busy juggling everything around.
How do you all fit everything in?

I know what you mean and I don't even have kids!!!

But... there's ALWAYS time to play horses. You need 'you' time too and I know if I didn't have Junior, I'd be extrmely miserable (and fat! It keeps you fit!).

Are your children into horses? I don't know how old they are but if they're older, maybe they could help/get involved so it's something you can share with them? Do you have a daughter? I always thought ALL girls were into horses?! But maybe that's me being utterly naive!!

Is there any way you could arrange part livery? Or have a bit of a rota on a DIY yard? I can't remember what you have over there, sorry!

Besides, the yellow one is going fabulously

AND he's more horse, less giraffe now!

omg your a busy lady! Have you thought of putting him on part loan where you look after him on certain days and the 'loaner' (for want of a better word!) does the other days? That way you could keep him at your present yard and still see him when you want. Also you'd have someone to share the costs. Or if you can afford to put him on Livery.

I know how you feel, I gave up my job as a bar manager last year as it was impossable to look after my lot and compete and do the long hours and late night at the same time, I now work 9-5 and hate it! not saying change oyur career though, I don't have kids to support.

Good luck hun xxx

Hi,

I can understand, well not me, my Sister.

She has an 18mth old, full time job, set up a business and bought a horse last year (after time off to have baby).
What crippled her was the lack of full livery near to her with good facilities, she put her name on someone's waiting list but just got so tired of the hassle in the meantime.
hence me joining here to see if anyone knew anything in that area, and yes, I'm hooked now!

I don't know how she made it through the winter, at one point she had worked an 8 hour regular job, with commute 1hr each way, looked after her little one before bed, then gone to the horse after not being up the night before - to find that the water on the yard had froze, and no one given her horse water for 48hours!
This was supposed to be full care.
Most nights she had to muck out, give the horse more feed etc.. and it put huge strain on her relationship too.
About a month ago she put him up for sale, it's breaking her heart but she says until they move house or better stable comes up it's just not a hobby.

I was so shocked by some of the things that went on at her yard (being close I got all the late night crying calls)!

You have to choose whether you are enjoying your hobby still or whether it is a massive chore.
I have hours of listening to my Sis cry over what was supposed to be "her" time, and a fun hobby and how she didn't have the energy to ride etc...

So be honest with your thoughts, you could always have a break and go back to it!

take care,

I know how you feel and i havent even got kids!!

I work 8 - 5, 1 hour travel to and frm work so all my spare hours are spent with the 'boys'!!

Oh and i dont have a OH either!!!

Well done for managing it.... and keep trying, u would miss them soooo much!!!!!

I know how you feel... and I don't have kids but mine is self inficted ( so my OH tells me)
I have 2 jobs ( 9 - 5 office m-f & bar work fri night, sat afternoon or evening & sun night)
BHS training tuesday nights
I have to fit my horses round all that. Fortunatly I have wonderful sharers that do the horses Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday

I know how you feel. It is very difficult to fit it all in and I don't have kids or a OH either!

I have just bought my 2nd horse too so it's up at 5:45 to get ready for work, go and check horses and fly spray them, etc, then get to work for 8.

Finish at 5 then go straight to stables and ride, poo-pick, feed, catch up with everyone!!

Don't get home til after 8 then still have cats to see to and get ready for work next day. Mostly eat my tea as I'm sitting looking through the Forum!

Winter will be worse though with stables to muck out but hey ho, that's the life I've chosen and I wouldn't change it for the world. I would probably be soooo bored if I didn't have "the kids" and be about 5 stone heavier!!

I do sympathise with your situation and agree that it can be so exhausting. It's a bit of a balancing act sometimes. Hope you don't have to give up!!

I think losing D has had an effect on you too. I'm really lucky as I have a great friend who I share chores with, so we help each other with each others horses. It works really well as I do most mornings and we both ride most evenings and she does Saturday as I work a 12 hour shift.
