My new part-loan horse who I've been falling in love with since December is in hospital as of last night
He came down with mild colic symptoms on 12th January. After lunging and some rest, on 14th he seemed back to normal and was eating, pooing, drinking, behaving normally.
I went to do him the following day and when I got there he was lying down. He got up when I went in, but was lifting his back legs and looking at his tummy. Yard owner said to lunge him so I did, just at walk, and he was fine and seemed glad to be out of his stable. He was behaving normally when we left.
The next day he was colicking again and the vet took blood samples after finding his guts were ticking over fine. Suspected infection, possibly in kidneys as he'd started having trouble weeing.
Bloods showed he was anemic, so vet prescribed Red Cell, bute, and antibiotics. In two days he was completely back to normal but had two weeks off.
Last Thursday we could ride him again - his owner rode him that night and he was really good, no symptoms etc, all fine, full of beans! I hacked him on Sunday and he was really bouncy and cheerful.
On Tuesday it was 'my' day again but got a call saying he'd been lying down and not touched his haynet all night, lethargic and not behaving as normal. The vet came back out, she was not sure what was wrong with him after inspecting him so took blood tests again and said maybe ulcers so would arrange more tests - scoping. She also commented on him being a poor doer (we knew that - he drops weight very easily and apparently has always been a poor doer). I went to see him (with his owner there too) that evening and he was eating his tea happily again, ripping into his haynet and really bright! So we were really flummoxed as he keeps being drastically up and down with how he behaves. I left feeling quite optimistic as he seemed back to normal again.
But last night his owner texted me saying he's got much worse and had to be rushed to Leahurst hospital. The vets still don't know what's wrong with him, just that something's not right. Hopefully I'll hear more today - I don't want to keep contacting his owner for updates because as lovely as she is, I know she'll be stressed and I'm still too new to be more involved and don't want to interfere. Just hope they can get to the bottom of it soon.
