How do you persuade your cats to use a new catflap? Norwegian Forest Cat was getting rather big for existing flap so we installed a new larger one. After a week, both cats are still convinced that it is an invention of the devil. The moggie will go through if you open it for her but the other cat will not go near it. The usual techniques of tempting him through with food, treats etc don’t work as he is such a good hunter. He is also very stubborn!

Leave the cat flap open ie tape it open for a few days , encourage them through with food then close it after a few days they should get the hang of it.

Take the magnets out of it for a week or two BASDCS, so it just swings in the breeze! It only takes the tiniest nudge then to allow the cat through. Taping it open is ok but doesn't create the same action when you finally release it. I have had great success calling on a helper (eg OH). One inside, one outside. Just "post" kitty back and forth a few times, preferably when he's a bit peckish, possibly giving a prawn each time he's "posted". If he doesn't do prawns, whatever his fave treat is. Should be fine!!!
