okay so im 17.
Home alone as mum & sister gone out
Doorbell rings
police man at the door saying my next door neighbor had been burgled today.
what makes it worse is that our front door and their front door is about a meter apart.
could have easily been our house AND i was home all day today. panicking at the fact they could have come in while I was sitting on the sofa.

rang my mum and she said she is coming home asap
Im probably over reacting but so scared right now!!

Aw hope you're ok. Sounds like it was earlier on so sure they will be well gone. Try calling a friend to chat to till your mum gets home, take your mind off it xx

But if they were burglerising you they'd have knocked on the door you'd have answered and they have pretended they got the wrong house. Burglers don't want the likes of you getting in their way. So switch the lights on and don't be scared. You will be fine.

Burglars normally watch the house and go in when the owners are out. You being at home is why they did next door instead. We were burgled once it was horrible knowing some stranger had been in our house. Hope your family are home soon.

Close the curtains, lock the doors, get on the sofa with a good film and a cup of whatever, your mum will be home soon.
I'm pretty sure with the police presence, there will be nothing untoward happen now. If you are worried before your mum gets home, phone the police. And please post to let us know that your mums home soon xx

Ok, calm down, stop panicing.

They didn't do your house - probably because you were in... No point worrying over what didn't/could have happened.. They will be long gone and know that the police will be around...

ps. didn't mean that to sound harsh!

The fact that you didn't hear them break in probably means they'd left a window open or something??

Our house was burgled while me & my oh were in, so know exactly how scary it is. My heart is pounding out of my chest just after reading that as it brings back memories :(. As others have said turn a light on & as someone suggested ring a friend for a chat while you wait for your mum to come home, you will be fine.

This is absolutely true. I once saw a group of kids outside next door but 3 neighbour as I was going out in my car, and I didn't at the time think much of it but I turned and stared at them because I thought they looked a bit young to be out that late, and couldn't think why they were there as next door but 3 had no kids. Turned out they'd only broken the front door glass to get in but probably as I stared at them a bit too long for their liking they'd not actually burgled but abandoned!

I was in bed & my OH had just got in while locking up they burst through back door he tried to hold them out, but 3 of them over powered him got in & gave him beating then came into my bedroom, but I had a beast of a dog with me which did try to attack, but they kept swinging an axe at her. She kept me protected as they didn't come near me. That was the longest night of my life :(

This is the only article I can find, there is another one that mentions me in it which I can't find!

dear lord that must have been horrendous, I am so so sorry. Could not imagine going through something like that.

I still kick myself now as the banging, shouting etc woke me up & I relised what was happening, but instead of ringing the police straight away I just froze in bed so if I had called as soon as I new something was wrong they may have been caught

I do panic still when I hear shouting or a bang outside, but we now have CCTV round our house as I just couldn't stay here without it :(

you shouldn't kick yourself for it, I would have probably done the same thing, or most likely hide under the duvet and cry!! what an amazing dog though! mine would probably go up to them looking for food!

so sorry again cannot imagien how scary that would have been x

When I lived in a different town a few years ago, the neighbours either side of me were both burgled, in separate incidents, but it really spooked me and made me nervous..... we moved shortly afterwards :o
