Just,...well,....needed to voice it. I had to have my 12 1/2 year old German Shepherd PTS yesterday. I had her since she was a baby and still clearly remember the ride home with her,...a little shepherd pup with floppy ears in a card board box. She was very clever, loyal and a strong character!
I hope she enjoyed her life. She came on every one of my holidays and enjoyed loads of beach and wood walks. Chased squirrels and rabbits and had 4 walks a day regardless of weather etc.
RIP girl. You were a fantastic dog and will never be forgotten by anyone who knew you.

I remember this feeling :( I didn't go home for a few days after he was gone because I just couldn't bear it.

So sorry that you are going through it. Don't know why we do it to ourselves ay?! Lots of peaceful vibes to you over the coming weeks xxxx

How could she not have enjoyed her life - 12 1/2 years of fun and love.... Lucky girl..

Hugs to you. Not a nice time. Hope you're ok.xx

Thank you so much for all your kind words. It is so hard, but it was undoubtedly the right choice to make. In her last 2 days she had no quality of life, and it was unfair and selfish to keep her going.
The house feels so empty and it's horrid not to be greeted at the door :(

That's a lovely tribute to her Abz88. What a life she had.
I didn't know GSDs chased squirrels :) my old lab loved to put a squirrel up a tree. How we miss them.

Thank you. She activley looked for them in the trees to bark at them! It was a brave squirrel that came into our garden I can tell you!

Thoughts are with you. I've lost several of my cats over the years, and know what it is like. It doesn't get any easier.

Oh, they break our hearts, don't they? :(

There's poem about the heart-break of loving a dog, which my Dad was very fond of. The last time I saw my Dad before his own death, he read this aloud to me:

The Power of the Dog Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

My lab is twelve now and
I know the time is coming the
Uniquely horrible experience you have just had is the price you pay for the love loyalty and fun they give us in time there will be another pup in a box and another different but wonderful friendship to enjoy

So sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like she was a huge part of your life...I love that you remember her journey home as a puppy with floppy ears - bless. I bet she had a wonderful life and that she's still looking out for you. RIP. They do leave a big hole in your heart. I hope in time like someone else has said there's another puppy in a box with you, all set for a wonderful life.

So sorry to hear this. She sounds as if she was a real character, and you can't beat a shepherd pup for cuteness. There is an "In Memory" thread in the AAD section where you can post a tribute to her when you feel able.

So very sorry for your loss: i had my beautiful GSD pts at 13 years old on 25th March this year. She had been with me since she was 12 weeks old. As you know yourself, it is the last kindness we can give them. It is very bleak without them, though. Try to keep going. Many condolences.

Sorry for your loss, sounds like she couldn't have had a day without love and fun though.fiona that poem is heartbreaking :(

Thank you all so much again for your kind words and the poem is lovely. I should imagine there will be another floppy eared pup in a box in the not too distant future :) And when that day comes, I shall post up the new addition to the family.
Thanks for all the support :)
