Think I'm losing my little dog. He's 17 and very poorly. Has arthritis everywhere and the painkillers have made him so confused. He's the best friend I've ever known . Not so much upset ( I'll do the right thing by him whatever) just wondering how things will develop Hard to watch him struggling and wondering at what point to intervene and call it a day.

I am so sorry you are facing this. Personally if he is struggling I think it is time to do the last kind deed for him. I have faced this far too many times, and always believe "better a week too soon than a day too late."

Sorry to hear this :( my nan old dog was just pts a few weeks ago cause he was just going down hill more and more. As they say, they will let you know themselves when it is time. Hes 17, that's a damn good age for a dog, so hes obviously had a good life :)

Thank you both. Rest assured that the deision will not be put off for any selfish reasons. I love this little dog too much to let him suffer unnecessarily. Just working with vet at present.

Soo sad to hear you're facing this decision. Not an easy one but we can at least offer our animal friends a kind and painfree path to rainbow bridge. Whatever choice you make will be the right one - 17 is a great age for an obviously very much loved pet :) xxxxxx

Its an awful decision but it is the final act of kindness you can make for your old friend. I know what you are going through, I had my two dogs PTS just before Christmas, one had tumours and the other had arthritis and had become incontinent. They were brothers and had never been apart so they went together over the rainbow bridge. I tore myself apart beforehand wondering if I had made the right decision but at the end they were so peaceful I knew I had done the right thing. I miss them terribly. You will know when the time is right.

I know what you are going through, had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago with my lovely old lab, he suddenly went down hill very quickly on the saturday and I had decided to call the vet out on the sunday to put him to sleep at home. My son and I sat with Blue until 3am in the morning stroking him, he wagged his tail smiled and went to sleep. I was happy we were with him at the end and he new he was loved. He is now buried in the garden. Sending you loving wishes xxx

Aww so sorry to hear this, we're almost in the same situation with our 17 year old, he has Metacam for his arthritis. Some days he really struggles to get up, and is very stiff. Others he's better. However all the time he is able to ask for something - whether that's to go out, come in, a treat or (more usually) a second dinner from whoever didn't feed him, we feel he still has a good quality of life. When he looses interest in doing these things and life in general then I like to think we'll know it's time.

Well Dubsie that's just about it. He doesn't want to do any of those things, not even eat his tiny dinner. Metacam isn't working and the tramodol today seems to have made things worse. It will take a miracle to get back from where he is. At least he's not in pain. Thanks again eveyone for your kind messages. Knew I could rely on you for some TLC
