just got a breaking news text that phillpia massa who crashed earlier today in formula 1 qualifying is now in a life threatening state with a fractured skull. hope he's okay-highlights how dangerous any sport can be.
 
Just seen the feed on news bbc 24 formula 1 , and they say he is awake and talking and able to move, so fingers crossed
 
The son of John Surtees (ex F1 driver) was recently killed at Brands Hatch in a freak accident. He was only 18....
 
I was watching the qualifying on TV, with "one" eye, the commentators said it was a spring from the car in front of him (possibly the other driver's car in that team?) that came flying through the air and must have hit him in the head. From the car-camera view you could see that after he was hit, his hands stopped trying to steer the car and when they switched from car-camera view back to "ordinary" cameras you could see that he wasn't holding his head up before the car crashed into the barrier.

Freak accident, the other car as I understand wasn't involved in any accident itself, something just broke and the spring fell off.
