not horsey - found a dog

aww poor thing I would suggest the dog warden? if not the rspca next?
Perhaps if you can put some posters up in local area and area you found him.

Glad hes safe now anyway well done you :)

Hope someone claims him soon

The vets will be able to scan for a microchip, so they would be my first port of call in this situation. Personally, I wouldn't take a dog to the dog wardens so long as it was friendly, but I'm set up to look after one, so could keep it and put posters up myself. If you're not in that position, have a word with the dog wardens as I doubt the RSPCA will have the capacity to take a stray in, but I'd go for the vets first.

If it were me, id let the police, dog warden & all the local vets know....those are who i would contact if mine went missing. Also maybe worth doing a shout out on your local radio station just incase. As to where to take it, well thats entirely upto you, if you hand it in to the vets i suspect it will end up with the dog warden anyway, as vets wont want to permanently keep a dog till the owner turn up. RSPCA will probably just tell you to call the dog warden as well.

Report to all three although is it possible you can keep the dog with you. I know wardens probably do a good job but the prices they charge owners to get their dogs back is eye watering.

The wardens need to charge so they can continue to offer the service they do - the dog should by law have an identity tag on its collar. I also think that microchips should be compulsory so all lost dogs can be easily re homed. If everyone micro chipped the wardens would have a much easier job = lower charges for all.

Phone around your local vets and the police - they should be the first places people report losing a dog. My vet surgery keeps a database of lost pets, and have reunited several with their owners.

Thanks guys, I have rung vets and police, who said have to ring dog warden. Dog warden is coming to pick up the pooch, I would keep it if I could. But have to go back to work later and mother in law wouldnt be happy with another one. Its a shame tho, she's really really lovely trying to give me kisses already. Gutted I can't keep her

Aw poor thing and what stupid owners. I have always dreaded sending a dog to the dog warden as always thought they just put dogs down if not claimed after 7 days. Is that still the procedure or not? I guess the warden knows who owns the dog then? Very costly for them!

Mind you, we used to have a black lab bitch who used to just leg it for no apparent reason (on the scent of something) she was rather loopy and would just vanish and go miles and then turn up on someones doorstop a village or two away or try get in someone's car. Thankfully she was chipped and had contact numbers on her tag. It was scary though when she did it and sadly her life ended because of it :( i woud say we were responsible and 95% of the time she was absolutely fine off lead and would stay with you and we'd walk her miles away from ay roads but, if the mood took her she'd go and that was that. She could never find her way home.

Aparently they know who's dog it is, its not chipped no collar or tag nothing. He said to ring in a few days see if its been claimed and after 7 days it gets put up for rehoming. He didn't say anything about pts, but I guess some must be. If she is still there in a week or so, think OH might be quite taken with the idea of another dog, showd him a picture tonight and he liked her
