Cat broke his spine between his back legs & tail last Monday (think hit by a car) , so at the mo has a catheta (sp!) until we find out if he still has the feeling that he needs to go to the toilet :( tail is completely useless so that will have to be removed if the toilet situation gets better.(if not its pts time :( :( :( )

So we've been back to the vets today after the naughty moggy has found a way to use the edge of his cone to pull out his catheta.
Left vets after consultation, 2 stitches to put cath back in, a new bigger cone & 5 days of steroids tablets .......& the bill was £5!!!!

Just wanted to say how fabulous the vets are being & please send healing vibes for my poor little kitty cat xxx

Thank you for your lovely messages!

Everyone here thinks I'm insane & should have pts already but he's my little baby!! Despite how much trauma he's been through he's still his normal self - running about, eating & drinking, coming for a cuddle, just can't go to the loo yet! That's going to be the hardest thing if have to pts with him being fine in himself :(

Aww poor cat, really hope you have a positive outcome.
I know it tends to be the standard on here but have you tried giving the cat arnica?
Probably sounds daft but one of ours had a similar injury and prognosis. On the x-ray it looked like someone had pulled his tail, it had concertina'd back over lapping so dislocated with a break as well. The vet was quite down on his prognosis but kept him in until he'd been to the loo, then he came home with strict instructions on no time out, watch to see if he has feeling & movement in his tail and if he could control his bladder. Much googling later I found a recommendation that arnica is useful for bladder control issues, so got some of the tablets and started giving him a couple a day for 2 weeks (the same amount of time he was on the vet prescribed metacam) - now you'd never know he'd had the accident and he still has his lovely tail with full use and sensation.
I don't know if it would have come right without the arnica anyway but given the vet was convinced he was going to have to be PTS (and very sniffy about homeopathy), I tend to credit it with at least helping.
Fingers crossed for your cat

I'll certainly ask the vet about that, thank you!

He has completely snapped his spine & spinal cord at the top of his tail, so its useless & just hanging. Vet is hoping that his nerves are just bruised & the need to go to the toilet feeling will return as the bruising goes down. Also it might be hurting him to actually go. He is going into his litter tray which is a good sign, just not able to pass anything.

He's on steroids tablets & has the cath in to empty his bladder. I have to give him an enema twice a day & also some cat laxative. Loads of olive oil & a stomach massage is also helping to shift things! keeping my fingers crossed xx

Poor moggy, healing vibes on the way...

One of ours had an RTA with 17 fractures of the pelvis, which had also become detached from his spine and 3 fractures in his leg. He also injured the innervation to his tail and had no feeling or movement in it, however it did progressively come right after 3yrs. TBH it is amazing how well cats heal. We were told that the main issue is ensuring that the nerves recover to allow them to "go" with our cat once the swelling and related pressure had subsided he was OK with the toileting.

If he does loose his tail he will adapt. We had a manx cat (born without a tail) and she was just a bit clumsy with her balance when jumping large distances but she generally managed fine.

They need plenty of TLC but do recover far faster than you would expect. Good Luck x

Wow that sounds awful - glad he came right for you!

I think he will adapt pretty quick to life without a tail - he was a little unbalanced last week with it not working but he's managing ok now. He's only young too. He's loving the TLC & lots of cuddles but really hates being stuck inside - he's laid on the windowsill now watching all the birds!! xx
