Got down the yard and found my poor pony had been beaten up from his field companion!! His rug has been beaten through in numerous places and his neck is covered in lumps and blood. He was covered in sweat as had obviously been chased around for a long time to be as sweaty as he was. Luckily he's not injured his legs but have given him some bute anyway as he has arthritic hocks anyway which were only operated 4 months ago!
His field companion is a complete drama queen and was left in the field earlier that day when I went out for a hack with a mare. Only thing we can think of why he would do such a thing. They were eating a starvation paddock down for somebody at the time so will be moved to the field with more grass on tomorrow but was not impressed :(

Poor pony. Unfortunately this something horses do. My lad has been a bully and has been bullied. They usually sort it out themselves but sounds like it went on for a while with your poor boy. I hope he is okay.

Feel for you. My horse can always been at the bottom of the pile, resulting in a £2000 vets bill for a kicked hock and numerous rugs torn. Now we are at a yard when they have their individual paddocks and it's bliss not having to worry that he's going to be kicked or bitten.

The thing is he's been in with this 1 horse for 9 months with only the odd bite. I do think theirs something more behind it all but who knows. Horses will be horses

I think you answered your own problem food or lack of? If they are grazing a starvation paddock sounds like the drama queen was after any bits that it thought it was missing out on. I bet the behaviour will become better when they are more occupied with food.

I had a similar thing last year with old boys companion he had a nasty cut on his leg (real gash) from being kicked by a younger HRH horse. We kept them apart but it was usually over food. ie hay being given out etc even if we did lots of hay piles dotted about she seemed to have it in for my arthritic boy(who had been a dominant horse in his youth).

Hope they settle back down if they get put back on the usual grazing..v annoying for you though.

No way would my horse be going back in with the other one tomorrow - I would move yards first.

Okay a quick "bugger off" thats my blade of grass or hay pile - it happens but this is not what it sounds like - it sounds more of a sustained attack.

sorry - would not risk another day of mine being beaten up

This

If they did not have enough food it would have caused a lot of tension- look what happens when you put one pile of hay down in a bare paddock between two horses.
I hope your horse is well soon and i wouldnt put him in with the other horse as the other is obviously the dominant one :)
