My cob has to do box rest due to ligament damage in his hock he has done a over a month and is not coping very well he is becoming a handful to manage, putting on weight, due to all the hay he is getting he is always banging ont he door! its a nightmare and this is so not him he is usually chilled and content.

Oh what to do !!

When my lad was on box rest we fed him D&H Convelesence (sp) mix. It has calmer added, so does have a calming effect. Also, it might be worth trying Horse First, Relax Me. That is a great supplement, and we keep stallions on it if they are kept in at all.

With regards to hay, we used two haynets, to make the holes tiny, meaning that he had hay all day but it lasted a lot longer. We also suspended it from a beam in the middle of his stable so that it was harder to pull out (rather than against a wall, where they can push it against the wall to get a grip on the hay).

I also paid for a shiatsu session every two weeks. Whether you believe in healing properties or not (I don't) is up to the individual, but it certainly relaxed him, and took some of his grumpiness away.

Mirror, Radio and Sedalin - he's obviously feeling well :-)

My Shetland pony has just come out of 3 weeks of box rest following an episode of Laminitis and we had to use Sedalin initially. He was ok without for a further week but once he was feeling better was kicking seven bells out of his gate to get out. We eventually allowed him on the yard following a disaster in the Arena - he went nuts after mum forget to give hime some Sedalin!!!
We did this for a couple of days and he's now out in the arena all day thankgod with a couple of hours at grass.

If you can make a small enclosure, or can let him stand on the yard it may help as per previous post.
Failing that, whilst it will cost, there are rehabilitation yards that specialise in horses recovering from illness / injury.
You have my sympathies, and I wish your horse a speedy recovery.

ACP? mine is now on wk 9 of many box rest wks, and was doing acrobatics for the first few wks was put on quite a few acp and have gradually been weaning her off them nowdown too just 4 or 5 whenshe is walked out. have also found snak - a ball very good with hi fi nuts although do need tomake sure dont use too many or the pounds pile on! also when giving hay soak for a longperiod of time as then they get the bulk but not the nutriants.

My guy had accident as 2 yr old and had to have nearly 12 month box rest he was ok untill leg started to heal then became a pain in a**e and very bolshy so was on mild sedation (which made no difference at all) but to allow him to heal properly i had to put up with it.Now he doesnt care less if he is in or out

Mine has had several stints of box rest, and used to be a real pain until someone told me about Horlicks. We actually used it the first time to back him, and have since given it to lots of horses on box rest. It really takes the edge off, mine just dozes all day in his stable when he is on it.

Get yourself a large jar and give him a couple of mugfulls of the powder in a small feed (chaff or something) twice a day. You can adjust the 'dosage' depending on how dozy it makes him! e.g. Mine had 10 mug fulls a day when he was being backed (he was a proper bucker), but we only give him 2 when he is on box rest.
