My pony loves XC and flies round like a loony but has always jumped well.

Lately i have been trying to re-school all her bad riding school habits.

Including trying to get her to get into a rhymical canter over XC instead of a mad gallop which makes tight or sharp turns almost impossible.

She has starting tapping a lot of jumps behind, we are only jumping about 2'3-2'6 [shes capable of 3ft atleast] and i really don't know why she is doing it??? she is less fast and long now so if anything she should be making a better shape, she never used to hit them when we were going fast.

when i jumped 2'6/2'9 tyres she cleared them perfectly.

Help i don't know whats going wrong!! its hard as i have no one on the ground to see whats happening.

she's fitter now than she ever was so shes not tiring.

shes not taking off to far away or too close.

shes on cortaflex as she is a bit stiff behind but nothing major.

Sounds like youve lost some impulsion as youve cut the speed, so shes not jumping as cleanly. Maybe try some grids at home to get her forward but not speeding through everything?

I have been told that the main reason why horses hit fences with their hind legs is if they are jumping hollow, and things which could make them jump hollow might be:

1) Rider not allowing with hands enough over the fence and making horse jump hollow.
2) Back pain
3) Jumping too fast and flat - very common in ex-racers who have raced over sticks

I guess also, thinking logically, if they have a problem with their hocks it might make them painful to bend.

have u had her back looked at?? it might be if her back herts she might be finiding it harder to pick up behind?? just a thought?

her back was looked at a few weeks ago and was all fine.

maybe i am not giving enough rein, she is a very whizzy pony and she was very against my hand last night i just think its odd that its just started happening over the last month of so.

i think maybe aswell she is too bold over these fences as we jump them once a week and maybe she has got a bit complacent and just bombs them without thinking??

i will try some grids etc next week and see if we have some improvement thanks for the tips
