Well, a little advice would be much appreciated, i'm not really a thread starter but this occured today and i'm not too sure what to do.

Anyway, long story short, I've been on the look out for a horse, put up wanted ads etc, now i did state in my ad that I can't take a horse till spetember, I mostly put ads up early because I know how long it can take to find the right one, I also stated clearly in my ad my situation, so people would be aware when they contacted me etc. Anyway, the perfect horse found me, and the girl selling was/is 100% aware that I cannot take her till september, and she was happy to hold on to her for me (I paid a deposit) and all that is arranged.

So anyway, now she has got another horse, and so has got the both of them to keep, though she wasnt going to get something till first horse gone!

Getting to my question, she has to have the vet out tomorrow because the horse i'm buying off her has come up with a rash or something on her skin which was hard for me to identify from phone description. I have paid my deposit but i still don't own her, but I feel really guilty about the fact this is happening whilst with current owner, and she's obviously already keeping her, but now she may have to pay vet bills etc. I do feel guilty easily. Also if the vet says the horse needs to be stabled she would have to be moved to a yard because at the moment she's just in a field rented by current owner.

Like i said, the agreement stated from the moment i spoke on the phone, from the moment i put up the advert actually! That I cannot take the horse till X date, but do I still have an obligation to help pay for any vets bills? as if she had sold to someone else this probably wouldn't be an issue for her, but she's still not technically mine.

Sorry for long winded, i'm frustrated not being able to be there for said horse :-( and feel really guilty on current owner.

My mums home made brownies for all (they are very good!)

No you're not responsible. Its still her horse. Unfortuntely these things happen, and you need to find out what it is... It was her choice to get the other horse after all.

My friend sold her horse to someone recently who couldn't pick it up for a week, and she didn't even ride it in case something happened!

I would have thought that you are not technically the owner yet as you have not paid in full nor have an agreement for part-payment. As things stand at the moment either of you could pull out of the deal so I would say that you are not under any obligation to contribute to any vet bill. Also - are you not having the horse vetted before you buy - is this 'rash' an ongoing skin condition which you have not yet been told about? Would the current owner allow you to be present when the vet comes then you can find out the exact situation and any treatment going forward. At that point you can take a view on the vet costs. Also - any pre-existing condition will be excluded when you take out insurance!!

Having said that - let's hope that it is only an allergic reaction to something and therefore nothing serious or cause for concern! Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for replies, very much appreciated.

I can't get there for the vet, but she was 100% when I saw her, and sorted all the vet business out then (she's already held her for a couple of weeks already)

thanks for crossed fingers, I reckon it's just a reaction personally but will find out vets results tomorrow, i'm sure I can contact vet re: results to be sure. Don't get me wrong she seems a absolutely lovely genuine person, but how does one know?

Rather than start a whole new thread, so people can read initial post etc

Spoke to current owner, and the vet thought it was just a nettle rash/allergic reaction to the nettles, she hasn't had a neck cover on recently as it was being repaired. so phew it's not serious and he gave a cream and of course what no vet could leave without leaving (other than the bill) 'bute.

I'm not going to go into it because i'll go on and on and on and on... (you get the idea) but while I really really love the horse and think she is perfect for me, the current owner is putting me off the sale, I feel like she's takling advantage of my good nature (she wouldn't be the first and undoubtably will not be the last) i don't want to not take this horse because she is such a special little mare, and i'm being agreeable to not rock the boat, but there is a point. Sorry said i wouldn't rant... ANYWAY...

It would be too easy for anything in my life to run smoothly!

She's going to keep me updated on horse... I also still have some phone numbers in my back pocket of some others i was offered just in case...

so owner has agreed to keep for a few weeks, taken good care of horse by getting vet out in that time-whats putting you off??

Sorry TG, she'll be in Essex!

SusieT - It's money, it's always money as in adding more money to things that aren't on the reciept, and then telling me that the money i'm paying the guy to transport her, he said he doesnt want so she said she'd keep? when the money was for his service.

Liek what?
the vets bills-well it is your horse really imo, you have asked her to remove it from sale?
Transport money def sounds iffy, but is it to offset the cost of livery or anything?

I asked her nothing of the sort really, she replied to my wanted ad which specified everything in it, as well as being told everything, every person i spoke to knew my situation and i told them if they wanted a quick sale then they wouldn't get it from me, she was more than welcome to decline me., and i was 100% greatful that she held on to her, but she also told me she was in no rush to sell, and if i didn't want her she may even keep her.

and she rents a field which she keeps her, now 2, other horses on, no hard feed costs cos she's not on any, no farrier bill etc it was to solely pay him for his day. She's literally only paying insurance which i've offered to take over.

I think i'm just stressing cos I just want pony here :-(
