I always say if you have a niggle there is something wrong then there is. And I have a niggle. Robin has lost approx 30 kg in 2 weeks. And looking tonight he has lost topline. Particularly withers. He is reacting to me getting on. He still seems happy to be ridden after the initial scoot but coming back up track tonight he just didn’t feel normal. He puffed a lot cantering up the field the other day. He is eating and seems bright and happy. I had booked saddle fitter as I’m pretty sure saddle bothering him but have cancelled and will ring the vet instead. It seems to link from when he hurt his jaw.

I am really hoping vet will tell me there is nothing wrong.

It sounds like a good call to get the vet out. Hopefully he will be fine and if not, then it's just something small.

You're right to call the vet first - of course the saddle might not now fit due to the weight loss and loss of topline. If there is something medically wrong and you resolve that then the saddle may be ok with the increase in topline. You might want to add a pad / shims if you decide to ride

Good luck with the vet, don't know the history but to lose that amount of weight at this time of year is a little worrying. One of ours had an accident & broke his jaw, it terrified us but he didn't need an operation, he was x-rayed and he was left for it to heal by itself. It healed, he had a small lump at the point where he broke the jaw but both vet & dental technician check him over & everything lined up perfectly. That was about 4 years ago, now the lump has reduced & is hardly noticeable. I'm not saying this is what has happened to your horse but just to let you know that things that appear a serious as what happened to one of ours doesn't mean the end. They recover & today you'd never know it had ever happened. Bloody insurance know though & three guesses..... yes he's got an exclusion now.

Vet been and it’s good news. No pain or any issues with the jaw or teeth. Heart lungs all good. Trotted up 100% sound. Took bloods and checked everything and all normal. The only small issue he could find were a couple of new scans on back socks. Query photosensitive. He has a nasty scar on a hind pastern that sometimes breaks down. He is wondering if when it breaks down it is actually getting burnt. And that last happened when he started loosing weight. Maybe something maybe nothing.

Vet said every year he sees a few horses with the exact same story and nothing to be found at exact same time. He feels a combination of coat changing and nights getting colder for some reason knocks some of them. He classes it as a real physiological syndrome.

So up the feed and conditioning feeds. Keep an eye on the scabs. Keep an eye and if he gets worse or dosnt improve call him back.

I also think I need to get in the school and do some actual work rather than just hacking. He is pretty good at working in a natural outline out hacking it’s not like he is a giraffe but he hasn’t been properly schooled in a year rather than the very odd session!
