Winter Coming, Cold Nights and Wet Fields :(
My Welsh D only has half a mane due to his neck rugs rubbing it out over the winter and even in the summer when rugless except some days fly rugs his mane has never grown back.

He does very well at showing but i know that at some shows his mane will be a problem so i was thinking of maybe hogging him this winter ready for next seasons showing shows and a few showing shows over the winter.

My Mini-Shetland had sweetitch and rubbed half his mane out so hogged him and his whole mane came back :D and came back really quickly :D

So do you think i should hog or not?

Thanks In Advance

What showing classes would you be doing over the winter? You wouldn't really be able to do M&M with a hogged mane. I wouldn't think it would have grown enough for next season either.

If it was me, I would shorten it all so that it was as near to level as you can get it, find a rug which doesn't rub his mane out and let it all grow back.

Hog to save any more problems, rubbed mane's don't grow back as nicley as one's that have been completely hogged off. My welsh d is hogged on if my connemara had a beeter neck he would be to

I agree that it would be better to shorten his mane until it is as even as you can make it, I had this happen to one of mine years ago and that's what I had to do. Don't hog him, he's a welshie and if you plan to show him, it is very incorrect for them to be hogged.

I also think you should try and find a hood that won't rub, although saying that - it's a flaming nightmare :D

Thanks for your replies guys, been great help. Sorry no photos atm as still waiting to set photobucket account up yet :p

I think i am going to shorten mane to all the same length as want to do M&M classes with him and if hogged will lose marks!

Also got him a hood but needs a new one as doesn't cover eyes just goes over ears and he can get it off, little monkey.

Thanks Once Again. x
