this may be long so i appologise now.

i have kept my horses at a very small DIY yard for the past 10 years. it has always been me and 3 other lovely liveries. over the past 2 years, weve had a few people come and go and now there are 6 of us. which is fine. they have settled in and we all get on.

the yard itself is on a huge working farm. and we manage our stables and fields ourselves. farmer leave us to it. anyway, i had a break from riding so i went down to one retired pony who lives out with another horse who has also been there 10 years. when i came back in to in it janurary, i said to farmer if i could bring on a youngster for me to back. he said no probs and gave me my old field back (where i kept previous riding horse who i had to feed ad lib hay). this field is tiny and is just enough for one small good doer, so i got a 12.2hh unbacked NF. the only thing that changed is that farmer said my rent would go up. i thought thats fine as i know the newer liveries are paying this amount so its only fair.

i then decided to get a bigger riding horse. so now i have three boys, a retired, a NF and a TB. ao i asked farmer if he would find me some space. he said yes and told me he would sort it out. he doesnt. so in the end, i turn Pony out with my retired boy and his friend (with other liveries permission) and Ron the new boy goes in to my old tiny paddock with lots of hay.

mean while, farmer has a new seperate HUGE field ready, with lots of lush grass and has brought on several new liveries who are kept compleatly seperate from us. their stables havent been build yet so farmer asks if id give up my stables for new liveries. i said no. he was obviously grumpy about this and didnt speak to me for a few days.

so i ask where my new boy will go because he hasnt got enough grass. he said he has to go right to the back end of one of the old fields, and bucket water. i dont mind as the grass is slightly better even though the field is still small but id be able to keep NF and TB together. so i go up and fence off my area today, sorted water out ect, then i walked the field to find that there are thousands of rabbit holes so big i decided i was NOT putting my horses in there. i have texted farmer asking if he will fill in said holes then i can turn them out. but he told me it was my problem.

now, TBH i feel extreamly put out. i have been a concistant good livery and now im paying double and getting much much less! im on rubbish grazing which isnt big enough for 2 horses as it is so ill have to continue with feeding hay.

everyone on the old field pays conciderably less then me. and everyone on the new field pays the same amount.

so i ask why doesnt he put the poor doers on the newer paddocks and the good doers on the older ones. he says no and that ive been 'very lucky here' which in fairness i have. the yard is right on my door step and is very handy.

i dont know what to do now as i know else where id get much better grazing for what im paying but i love where i am, i get on so well with everyone and its so easy. i feel like im being forced out and we ( as in the 4 main liveries ) dont matter. we loved it how it was, just us lot doing our own thing but obviously its not our land so we cant complain. im not sure if its worth moving, but then again i think im paying for much more then what im getting.

Sounds a bit unreasonable to me. Is he taking advantage a bit do you think? Do you have a dad/BF/husband who may be a bit more on his level (if he's an old farmer type) to explain the situation?

I wouldn't put up with that, TBH.

Maybe shop around a bit. If you've been there ten years things may have changed since last time you looked.

If it's niggling you enough to post about it then a move elsewhere must be in the back of your mind.

I'd think I'd be annoyed too if I was a longstanding livery and new liveries were given priority.

However, if you are happy there and shop around you may find the grass isn't always greener. But it has to be worth a look.

It's tricky. Business is business and as the new liveries are paying more I can understand why he is keen to keep them happy.

In regards to discussing the field scenario - if I was to say something similar to my last YO, I would be told to not be so stupid! He was lovely!

Have a look around so you at least know your options. Then you can evaluate the situation again. As above, the grass isn't always greener!
