I have just found out I am pregnant. (Was a suprise but we are over the moon about it).
The problem is I got my mare in October last year, I wasnt looking for a horse as such but when I saw her I had to get her. She was really underweight and if I dodnt get her Im pretty sure she was heading to the meatman. Ive got some weight on her over winter and done the odd bit of hacking out. She was hacking out great alone befor Christmas but then we had all the snow and since then she has started being really forward going whilst hacking, she starts jogging and going sideways and calling to her mates back at the yard. Im not the most confident rider so do get a bit worried/scared at times.
Ive recently started back at my old place of wor as well as run my own business, and now Im pregnant Im really not going to have the time to give her that she deserves. So I really think the best thing for me to do is sell her.
But Im not sure she is saleable as she windsucks/cribs and all ive done with is a tiny bit of hacking which she isnt great at now. I dont want to put her out on loan as I will be stuffed if the loanee decides to give her back.
What do I do?
 
Test the water with an ad to see if she's saleable.

If you get no sensible response and you don't want to loan then tbh pts is the only way you can assure that she doesn't get passed around in future.

Sorry it's brutal but those appear to be the only options that you are left with.
 
how about a charity where they will put some work into the horse and then assess whether it can be rehomed as a riding horse.....or a companion horse?
 
OK, dont agree with putting to sleep a healthy horse.

Do you want to sell her?

I mean, could you not carry on working with her now and then find a jocky whilst your later in your pregnancy and then get her back when your baby is born?

If you do not want to keep her, I am sure if she goes on something like project horse you could find a loan home for her, at least this way it can be with all her current quirks. If the unfortunate happens and they want to give her back, could you not just advertise her again, for another loan home? (that is of course if it does happen) Or again on project horse a buyer.

How old is he?

I would definitely think she is worth something to someone. Alot of horse get joggy on the road, wouldn't worry about that. What type of hacking have you done, i.e plod up the lane or out and about more?

To be honest, she doesn't sound too saleable.....but that doesn't mean you can't sell her :)

Both my horses cost £1.

1) Monty - 25yo tb, very underweight, nappy, spooking and not a novice ride. cribs/weaves etc
2) Zoom - super little tb BUT very very fizzy, headshakes badly in summer, only has one eye.

What I'm trying to say is that there are nutters around like me who actually want a horse like this and both horses have given (and in Zoom's case still does) me loads of fun. I think the crucial thing is selling for small amounts attracts the wrong type sometimes. With both my horses, I got them on share/loan first and then bought them. This way, the owner can rest assured I am genuine, and I can check that I actually WANT the beast :D

I know you say loaning is not an option but I think that loan with view to buy or share with view to buy may be the only sensible thing to do if you want any sort of peace of mind after the sale that she will not end up in the wrong hands.
 
I completely agree with Jemima_too - if you don't get the response you want from advertising her for sale and you don't want to loan then there is only one thing left to ensure she doesn't end up in the wrong hands.

Tough decision to put an animal to sleep but kinder than allowing it to be passed from pillar to post.
