A friend of mine has a Friesianxtb (looks friesian) for sale, she is asking £1500 but she would probably accept a bit less, he is four has been backed but needs bringing on, she is selling him because she is pregnant and doesnt have the time and would like him to go to someone who could do more with him, I've said I'd like to take him on as a project which she is happy with, my aim is to bring him on and then turn him away for a few months over the winter and sell in around march when my three year old who is turned away now will be four and will need more work. Do you think its a good idea what could i expect to sell him for, i have experiance in backing and breaking so i wouldnt need much outside help, he isnt shod, the livery yard i am at is cheap at £20 a week for stable and field, the horses can live out until November so it would only be a few months of shavings and hay, I have things in his size which would fit him, i would only need a few rugs and to be honest it would give me something to do horse wise this year just dont want to if it is going to be a huge loss.

Sorry for the long post!

Thanks

If you want to buy him to bring him on and resell him I personally wouldn't although it sounds tempting. Nothing is selling atm and once you have bought him you may be stuck with him! The horse market seems very unsure!

i agree , but if you got the money to keep hold then go for it ,but i have two full friesian foals both are fps registered , priced nicely , but no real intreast

Thanks, its so tempting but as you say the market isnt very stable, I dont want to risk not being able to sell him in time for me to be concentrating on my youngster and I've got an older mare as well to keep in work, thanks you've talked some sense into me lol

Could you come to some agreement with the owner whereby you take him, bring him on, pay for the hay etc and then split the profit when it comes to selling? For example, she takes the 1,500 she wants, you take out what you've spent on livery, feed etc and (assuming there is something) whatever is left you split say 60/40 so that you get a slighty bigger portion for the time you spent putting into him getting ready to sell. Only works if your friend doesn't need the money now I suppose!

Thats what i was hoping to do, unfortunately she owns half of him and the other half they want to sell, I dont know whether to buy out the half from the other lady and then do some sort of agreement like that with my friend. Would you say a Friesian is more likely to sell than most breeds, I know they are very popular! Thanks

friesian do sell , but there are people out there that sell friesian at the low end of the scale so people that put a reasonable price tag for a friesian do not sell easy if you get my meaning . like mine they have a reasonable price tag for a friesian , but there are curruntly ones that are being sold for 1500 which then people do not look at the reasonable price bracket , cause they know they can buy ones 1500 , so if you do ever sell look at the prices of friesians but you got to remember he is a cross so not worth more then a pure friesian

but if you ask mealrigghall stud ,they use to breed friesian x tb so might beable to give you a rought estimate on what he be worth

Ok thanks, I'll have a chat with them, is there any specific websites just for Friesians? an advert is going up for him today, so I'm just going to wait and see what happens as things are all a bit manic with me at the moment, I'm going to be of the mindset that what will be will be! It doesnt help that I have always admired Friesians and always wanted one!

if you mean sites to sell friesians , then you can advertise on all sites such as horsemart , horsedeals etc ,there are friesian sites but they are for pure breed not crosses

i see a freisian x on horsemart and that was up for £5000 it is now sold
so you may stand a chance if you bring on good luck
