Earlier this evening i went for an informal job interview at a new full/part livery yard, 18horses in total. Its only a couple of miles from where i live & would be working from 7-9am at present with a ym, as the yo can fetch the liveries horses in on an evening, but as winter progresses would also be a couple of hours in the afternoon fetching horses in. Its good(ish) pay for an equine job but being so few hours im questioning if its really worth it? It would also mean me getting up early to sort out our 6horses before going, or at least feeding them before i go & turnout when i get back. So.... do i just go for it & see if it works out, develops into more hours, or do i pass it by & hope something with more hours comes up? Confused!!

if you are driving to the yard, will you make enough after your expenses have been taken out to make it worth the effort?. its a difficult one . but good luck

thats kinda what i was questioning myself. I will be driving, so it will be costing to get there, but i will stil be making money as its literally 5mins down the road, just hardly anything. Argh if only it was a few more hours!

Do you have a job already that you would be giving up to do it? If not I would give it a go and see what happens as you have nothing to lose and everything to gain if more hours do become available. Also if all 18 horses are going to be a minimum of part livery the chances are the yard owner may have underestimated how long it takes to feed, turnout, muck out etc.. so its highly likely they will need you more.

No harm in trying it but continuing to look for something else.

i would still do my 6 (3 are yearling, 1 retired so only have to ride 2) & can turn them all out within 20mins (also keep em at home so no driving to them) & can muck all out, hay, water in bout hr-hr&half so could do that after working there. Hopefully turnout before going there.
Am unemployed at mo, finished uni last yr & been renovating house/yard since then, so being general dogsbody for parents project!
I also reckoned it would take longer to do 18 then a couple of hrs! even with 2 of us! Esp as they are all on big beds & fields can be a bit of a trec! Its a new venture for them, having never run a yard before & filled up quicker than they expected.

I had two jobs that were exactly as you describe.. One was two hours in the morning and one was two hours in the afternoon. I found that it ruined my whole day as it broke it up so much. Like you I was only a short distance down the road but in the winter the fuel was quite steep as the car wasn't even warmed up by the time I got there. I did enjoy the jobs but found by the time I had chatted with the YO and had a cup of tea the job had become 3 hours for each (paid for two) and left no time to do anything else other than my own horses before moving onto the next one. I may be too soft but I also ended up doing 'extras' at the begining or end of the two hours and never really getting any more for it. I'd give it a go but make sure you factor in petrol etc and be really strict on the time keeping to make it worthwhile as im sure you will struggle to fit any other work round it should it be offered..

In that case I'd definitely give it a go :)

Would give it a go, sounds like you've got nothing to lose as it's so close and it may well turn into more hours too . . .

Just be strict with your time so you're not giving them to much for free especially to start with as then they'll grow to expect it.

I would go and soon they won't cope with out you and will want you to ride and help more, even if the horse owners pay you you will make contacts which will lead on. It won't all happen at once as they have to trust you as giving someone a job now is very hard for the owners legally.

thanks guys! its nice to voice thinks out & get other perspectives on a situation. Im gunna go for it, what have i really got to loose aside from some early mornings :p & fingers crossed the hours will increase!
