Well as the title says really...

I spend ages in walk getting her long and low, and then when I ask for trot she tries to canter but if i insist on trot she shuffles for about two 20m circles..However if i canter a circle she goes into a lovely open trot...

This problem has only just started happening and I don't know whether it is because she is stiff (although she is 5) so i wouldn't imagine it would be that. Or maybe it is just because she has started working properly over her back (all back, teeth and sadlle have been checked in the past 2 months..)

Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated, my instructor said just to let her canter because it was her way of loosening up, but i would just like her to trot... I'm probably worrying over nothing..

What happens if you ask her to trot round the edge of the arena? Is she worse on a circle? What about if you give her her head and let her stretch down? What does she do on the lunge?

I would let her stretch out and work her really long and low in trot. It sounds like she is not wanting to go forwards and maybe tensing up in her neck. If you let her trot with her head down and neck long she will be able to balance herself and build up the muscles over her back. Work around the edge of the school putting in chages of rein and large circles / figure eights and see if that helps. Once she builds up some strength and starts to accept the bit you should be able to get her to raise her head and work rounder.

Hope that helps! I'm by no means an expert but you can't go wrong with going back to basics!
