I'm very upset that it just hasn't worked out with my loan horse. She's a lovely girl but we just don't seem to get along and after I fell off, after a spook and buck, on our first ride at home together, I have really lost my confidence.

I tried having lessons with her and it helped my conifdence no end, but we were still having battles to get her down the lane when hacking out alone and in the odd hour I can snatch to ride as it is, I don't want to spend half an hour battling down the lane and back again.
Her owner is being so lovely and understanding but I feel such a numpty and like I've let all concerned down.

It doesn't help my decision when I went to look at a "complete and utter plod, with more brakes than neccessary" yesterday, only to have to bolt out of the stable, dragging it's owner behind it and nearly ploughing me down! "I don't suppose you'd like to see him ridden now, would you?" Errr, no thanks!

Oh and a picture of my loan horse, because she really is pretty

Anyway, self-pity moment over and here's to back on the search, but for the most sedate boring plod ever now!

Awww.....sorry it hasnt worked out....but you need a horse that makes you happy, not stressed or nervous.

There are plenty of loan horses out there i have a nice quiet one but no one seems to want him due to the fact he is a TB lol Just proves cobs aren't always the easy one the one you went to see sounds like mine lol he runs off but is quiet to ride lol goodluck there are plenty on horsemart including mine!

I've just looked at your pic and gone oh my gosh you've got my mare, she looks and sounds just like her, haha!

Not that I'm encouraging you to stick with her but as your confidence is improving so much with lessons could it be that she's just severely trying it on out hacking to test you?

Obviously I know nothing about the situation but it took me 4-6 months to get madam hacking out nicely without napping or trying to go home with every other horse she met!!!

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't let it get you down, you certainly haven't let anyone down, we all know what gits horses are, crikey I got to the stage I thought Bev was going to say to me ok I've had enough you obviously can't ride her maybe you should give up!!

Keep your chin up, there's always something else around the corner waiting to come along!

Thanks for the hugs Poppymoo.
Yes you're right, something will turn up one day that's just right. I have debated giving my loan horse back and just concentrating on getting my daughter (4) and her pony going better, but it seems such a shame having all those long glorious summer evenings, when I could be riding. Although I did decide I was giving up on men and I'd never speak to another male, when a week later my now husband walked into my life and the rest, as they say, is history. We've been married 7 years next week and have two beautiful girls!

"Do you believe that there is someone, up above. And does he have a timetable, directing acts of love?" Or horses to love should that say!

chickeninabun, everything Will work out for you, just dont let this get you down. Good news that the owner is being nice, but it sounds like youve made your mind up, and she should go back to her owner before you lose your nerve and before she (the mare) takes advantage of your fears. You will find something great, they are out there. Very best of luck

Ditto above, at least she is on loan and your not having to sell her.....then you would really have problems.

By the sounds of things you need a horse you can ride one day...leave a few days and roll and ride out again with no problems, not something you have to spend lots of time confidence building, re-training etc....and getting thrown off and loosing your confidence the process and injuring yourself, there are professionals out there that are paid for doing that job!

It must be very disheartening for you, specially when you have got attached and were looking forward to doing lots of things together ((hugs)) but there will be a horse out there that ticks all your boxes.

Perhaps you needs to narrow your list down a bit when searching for your next horse, to enable the chances of finding something suitable....avoid certain breeds for example and concentrate on viewing certain types?

Cheer up honey, it could be worse trust me and you'll find something you have just got to keep looking.

Do you know what frustrates me is you are looking for a horse on loan and I know of a really nice 16hh or so gelding near us who has been stood in his field all alone for over a year doing nothing.

I do not think there is anything physically wrong with him and I know he definitely hacked out alone and in company. My sister and I feel so sorry for him being kept in isolation in his field. I am guessing the owner just doesn't want to sell him but hasn't got time/inclination to ride him anymore.

I'm desperate to be nosey so maybe I shall and use "I know someone looking for a nice loan horse" as an excuse to chat to the owner! hehe

What sort of horse are you looking for btw?

Thanks everyone you are making me feel much better.

My loan horse, was loan with view to buy, as I'd really prefer my own but loaning initially would be great as it helps see if any problems arise. I now have a slightly higher budget (still not massive tho) so can afford to be slightly more picky.
I have no strict ideas on what I would like, but I'm quite tall and well built (dieting!), so 14.2hh upwards, obviously cobby/stocky types if nearer the smaller end of the scale.
I love my friends welsh cob, but I've seen a couple now and they've both been loons. My sister used to have a fantastic arab, so I adore those too. I'm really not fussed.
I'd prefer a gelding as my loan horse is a moody mare and my daughter's horse is the moodiest mare I've ever met, so prefer the boys!

Age doesn't really bother me either. I don't want a prancing 4 year old but neither a 20 yo walking vet bill!
smirk.gif

And all I want to do is hack around the country side, the odd sponsored ride and maybe a local show/riding club occasionally. I just need something very very safe and sane and steady, maybe with a top gear for those autumn stubble field moments, but mostly something I can trust, doesn't need riding everyday and will give me back my confidence!
Yes, I will have my cake and eat it!!

Oh and all for less than £2500!!

In that case I know of a TB mare for sale.........No idea what they want for it though I'm afraid. Nice little mare, I assume pretty sane and sensible, 9 yo and hacks alone or in company........ Am not sure where she's advertised though but they are still trying to sell her - they basically want something to do more x-country/general jumping with but this mare is happier hacking and doing dressage (she has some BD points as far as i know).

Oooo, if you could get some more details, LadyT, then I'd be quite interested.
Only stipulate she must be suitable for a novice (that is what I am now calling myself!) and hack alone.
