We normally have 2 or 3 local shows at our place in the Summer. At the last two I have put on 'novelty' classes which have had big entries and I'm trying to think of some more for people whose horses are perhaps not up to winning more 'traditional' showing classes. We have done;-

Prettiest Mare
Handsomest Gelding
Horse or Pony the judge would most like to take home

Any ideas for any others?

Loveliest mane and/or tail (don't do longest - get ones with tails dragging on the floor :( )
- can be judged on cleanliness and condition as well as how it looks overall

Best colour - could divide into coloureds and standard colours if necessary

Blemishes don't count - for all the lumpy/bumpy horses!

Thelwell lookalike (limited appeal to shetlands and hairy natives though)

Horse and hound - best pair, judged on compatibility of horse and dog

These are some of the ones we have done at a show. Are these ridden or in-hand? Dog one would need a handler obviously - can't have horses treading on the dogs - ouch!

Statues - bit like musical chairs only you put down carpet samples and one foot has to be on the sample. There are the same number of squares as entrants otherwise you get collisions but the loser is the one that moves a foot off first.

Can be done in hand or ridden and gives the steady eddies a chance.

Another option is to stick canes in the ground and the handler/rider has to put a hand on the cane & then neither should move.

...........................................
If you want to break up groups you can do a bits match. A spinner is easy to make and you have segments with different parts.
These can be as sensible or silly as you like eg silkiest nose. prettiest eyes, smartest feet, roundest rump, cleanest tack.....

It is spun for each pair and they are only judged on that one part. Next round you spin again and you can use the same or a different spinner ( add stickers with new tests/parts)

We've used this for dog matches and it throws up weird results but people always approve even if they bemoan the spinner not being favourable to their pet - they can see it is fair to all.

How about a handy pony class. :D

Horse/pony that would make the best photo.

Best plaits.

Most unusual plaits.

Best natural mane and tail.

horse/pony most suited to it's rider/handler.

Pair of horses/ponies most alike.

Pair of horses/ponies most unalike.

Urm just a few ideas there. ;) :p :D :D
