Ok where you do a 20m canter it says "Give and retake the reins"

So how many times do you do this? And what is the best method of presenting this? i.e. half the circle with a long rein half without?

Any tips appreciated!

You give and retake the reins just the once. Give the rein forward for about 3 strides and then take it back again to a normal contact. The idea is to show the horse in in self carriage and not being held up by the riders hands.

Hiya

You only give and re-take the once. Basically you push your hands forward (some say towards the ears) allowing the reins to 'loop' for about 2-3 strides then take up the normal contact again.

The give and retake should be one continous movement over 2-3 strides. Push hands towards horses mouth so reins loop and then bring them back to the normal position (do not lift hands as this doesnt release the contact simply lifts it). Try to keep your position throughout the movement.

Read the BD rule book and it gives a brief description of the movement

Its mostly to check that the horse can maintain its self carriage
