Hi there,

I've recently started to ride, fallen completely in love with the whole sport! The only problem is the expense, £25 for half an hour lesson really is a lot for a student! My parents don't fund me and therefore I am having to limit the amount of time I spend learning to ride which is a real shame.

I have heard that most yards require help with daily duties and will pay with lessons or loan of a horse. Is this a popular thing for stable managers to do?

Any feedback would be great,
Fay.

Hi it is quite popular for ppl to help riding school yards on wknds to lead in lessons/generally help out etc. When I was younger it was for free rides...however you just have to keep eye on this as in 4yrs I got 1 free ride!!!

Where abouts are you based? I'm sure someone will be able to recommend a RS in your area that does this

Are you a university student? A lot of universities have equestrian clubs, various activities go on, includng subsidised lessons, group discounted lessons etc

I worked in a yard when i lived in Birmingham as couldn't afford to keep a horse. Made it clear when I spoke to YO that I didn't want payment just in return for rides. Worked for me as all the other weekend girls were teenagers or younger. As an adult who could ride I actually used to get 2 or 3 rides a day as I could escort rides as I was over 16!! A bonus for being the old fart!! and they also knew I would do my jobs unsupervised. Still did as much (and probably more) work as the others but they chose to be paid and have one ride. Worth thinking about when you talk to YO.

Whatever degree you're doing, I hope the resulting job pays well

Only joking. Others have offered sound advice, so I won't repeat it.
