I have decided to enter into a small novice show jumping class but have no idea where to start!

I've only had my boy 4 months so not sure how he will react in crowds. Should I hack him to the show jumping yard first to see how he reacts and enter at a later date? He's a non-loader at the minute so wouldn't be able to travel too far (haven't got a box to practice with).

I think taking him somewhere busy without the pressure of competing is a fab idea - has he been away from the yard before? Have you been to a show before? If not it would be good to see how he reacts to the people and lorries and boxes and kids and dogs and warm up area with horses whizzing past.

I would also see how he is in enclosed area at home with other horses. Good luck xx

You can almost always enter classes on the day - it is rare that a class at local level gets closed becuase it is too full. If it is too full you probably wouldn't have wanted to jump it anyway so you have lost nothing!

Try hacking over and see how he is. Even if you just go around the collecting ring for the experience it will be useful. Iif he is calm and settled then enter something on the day - clear round is usually a useful introduction.

I would recommend possibly asking a local busy livery yard/ riding school if you can pop up with your youngster that way you can hack there costs you nothing and hopefully it will give you some idea, maybe have a jumping lesson when they are busy or hire the areana for twenty mins
