Novicey questions about jumping...

I would really like to take my mare showjumping and dressage this year (fingers crossed she can as i've just started bringing her back into work this week!)

A local yard holds open unaffiliated dressage and show jumping in the evenings every few weeks so I thought this would be a good thing to try out, on the website they say:

35 cm clear round (£5) and classes start at 45cm going up 10cm each time £10 per class.

What is the difference between the 35cm clear round and a class?

If you wanted to jump, say, 55cm do you wait until 35 and 45 have been done and then jump the 55cm course and that costs £10?

Also is there a dress code for this kind of thing? Will I need showing stuff...?

Clear round usually means there are no prizes involved, kind of like a 'practice' round, and it's usually just one round (1-7/8). Class jumping will usually have 2 rounds comprised of 13 total fences, so you'd do 1-7 and 8-13 or something like that (it varies by individual show but that's what I see usually), and there are also prizes at stake - hence why it's ore expensive to enter. Often if there's a league you will gain points from classes but not from clear round.

Each class is run in succession, so yes, you'll have to wait until the 55cm class to jump - it would take the organisers forever if people just jumped in whatever order and the fences had to be changed each time!

Regarding the dress code, best to ask the organisers - but for unaff shows there is usually no dress code. Just look smart!

Just to add: in the 'clear round' event, you will get a rosette if you jump round clear regardless of how other horses do.
In the other classes, there may be a jump off and you only get a rosette if you are in the top few in the class after this (or after both parts of the course as mentioned above).
Some people with spooky horses will do the 35cm clear round before doing a higher course, just to get their horse used to the jumps/ring etc. If you or your horse are very nervous it can pay to do this too just as a practice.
Gear will need to be safe and nothing out of the ordinary (e.g. some bit types not allowed, some gadgets not allowed, helmet compulsory). Perhaps if you list what you normally would wear then people here could comment on it?
