Merlin the week I bought him..... my first horse that I owned, after years of riding other peoples (badly)!!!

Previous farrier said he would look good between the shafts of a cart.... subsequent long standing insecurities about cart horses!!!

Early this year.... skinnier but fit!!! Loads of hacking and schooling etc till hocks went sore

Yes the head is particulary pleasing to me..... probably coz you cant see the carthorse body behind it

That was the last competition we ever did

before the deadly diagnosis.

There's nothing wrong with being a heavier horse...my Shire X is certainly different from all the delicate little warmbloods/TB's at my yard...although there's a Clydie there too now.

He has an arthritic fetlock, although he does not go lame on it... the x-rays are something to behold, but he passed a 5 stage when I bought him and has never had an injury to cause such a massive problem... and the vet says he would pass one again as he doesnt go lame even on severe flexion tests!!!

Its just that now I know, I am very protective of him

But before diagnosis we did one day events, show jumping and low level dressage. Jumping, he was always placed but the dressage is a bit beyond us... we started to get fairly good but then the diagnosis and the reality that schooling in cirlces is bad for his leg... so gave it up

not that either of us really enjoyed it to be honest.... jumping is what we loved!!!

I think sometimes your best off not knowing, A year ago i had a coloured mare who i hunted about twice a week then when i sold her she was found to have a severe heart murmour i couldnt even ride her once i knew , i wish id never tried to sell her and would have had years of fun not knowing

Exactly my point, we were having such fun. Hard ground or muddy, he never went lame, was never booted etc or mollycoddled in any way, no suppliments etc!!

Now he may as well have no legs, I am worried about every uneven stride, whereas before it would not have worried me.

its very sad , somethings are best unknown, but knowing there was a heart murmour worried me so much i coulnt even hack her out as the vet said she could drop down dead, Id hunted this mare no problem but never again, such a waste of a 5 year old

He would be perfect

He's a real sweetie, affectionate etc and a nice lively ride... but very safe.

Not for sale though
